South slope uintas...

I,ve heard the south slope elk herd is quite a bit bigger than that on the north slope. I know parts of the north slope fairly well and it's alot closer for me. I've spent alot of time up there but never on the south face. Just interested in opinions on one versus the other.. especially from someone who knows both sides fairly well. Looking at broadening my horizons...wondering if its worth the extra $$ in fuel.

If you know where the elk are on the north slope, I would stick with it. The elk are still difficult to find on the southslope. I have been to both, I find elk on the southslope easier. But I was raised out there. I have seen some nice bulls on the northslope.

I'll tell you who it was . . . it was that D@MN Sasquatch!

If it helps I think most of that population is on tribal. It is where I grew up and know it pretty well, but I don't hunt it now that I have hunted Wyoming and Colorado.

Bail off the road anywhere along the chipeta road? Are you trying to kill the kid? Its a steep thick dirty rotten bastard.....

I have seen a few bulls bailing off in those parts... If you want easier i saw a good bull on the train ride at lagoon.LOL

Wow guys thanks for the information. I really appreciate your input. Sounds like you know the area pretty good. Taking my boy out for the early youth elk hunt this fall and I want to make the most of it.
kawboy... Can't say I know the north slope real well. Way too much country to know it all. Going up there this weekend to learn a little more about it. Would like to swap some info with you.
treedagain... Thanks for the area specific info. Steep and thick doesn't scare me. Keeps most of the others away. Guess I need to make a road trip.

Treedagain, stop giving all my elk hunting spots out! I know they aren't top secret, but geez, make a guy earn it a little.

Thanks again guys for all the info. It's alot more than I expected. Think I may head south and east next weekend and check out some of these leads.
Kawboy...Got your P.M. Leaning towards north slope just because it's closer for me and I know it better but I'm still playin' it by ear. Gotta figure out how to respond in a P.M.

South_slope...Thanks for the P.M. man. I appreciate the info.

treedagain...Can't ask for much more than you've given. That's a shload of good info. Guess I better put the boots on.

I am gonna have to post a nudie pic or something to get this thread nuked by one of the moderators!!!

We will be up there in early September. My son drew the early youth hunt tag. If we find anything, and your still hunting, we will let you know.

It's all new country to me up there - so anyone with any pointers, help some of the new guys out.

Lol now all that will be there is 4 wheelers and hunters! He is right there are elk there. But seems most people end up there so be ready for that.

BigMedicine...Didn't mean to step on any toes man. I'll send pictures if that helps any.
jswill0608...Congrats to your boy! Maybe we'll see you on the hill. Keep in touch for sure.
justr_86...I hear what your saying. I dont know of much public land that isn't crawling with 4 wheelers and people come fall. Gets worse and worse every year. Went for a hike Saturday. About three miles from the truck and 10,700 ft. in elevation, just as I thought I was getting to where most people wouldn't go I came across a trail cam strapped to a tree. So much for thinking I was the only adventurous one.

LAST EDITED ON Jul-27-11 AT 07:18PM (MST)[p]Good luck man!

Last year there was an article in the newspaper on the wasatch front that the pole creek area was the best any bull spot in the state.... It was rediculous all the people there.... More so than usual... I'm not seeing the elk numbers this year I have in years past, dont know if its connected or not but the elk were spread out soo bad....

justr_86...
"Article in the newspaper" "ridiculous all the people up there".
Guess I know one place I won't be. Ha ha! Good info.
I wouldn't be surprised if that had an impact on the herd up there. Not a ton of elk to begin with.

justr_86...
Sorry to hear one of your spots has been overrun. Seems to happen more often than not. Gettin' away from the crowds gets harder and harder.

Thanks again for all the info guys. I made a trip over to the south slope Saturday and Sunday and followed up on some of the leads given. Awesome, huge, thick country. Perfect for elk. So much country, so little time. Guess I gotta make another trip and look at a couple of the better lookin' spots a little closer.

I have hunted both a lot over the years. I have always found elk on both slopes. The south has more room(and elk) which is good and bad. The weather seems to be an issue. Snow will push them out of the back country. Get in the trees and away from the roads and you will see elk. I have killed elk in the Granddaddy lakes to Vernal-nothing big, but they are in there.
