Wow! That's what i'm talking about. That's easely an exteemly high valued buck. Whoever hit it should be made to pay for it's death. I'll bet that bucks worth $1,000's!

Howcome cars and the people who drive them can kill deer and not have to pay, but when they hit people or cows, it's a crime? Deer are game animals, not vermins!

During rough winters the deer, elk, moose and sheep get hammered on our highways but the DOT doesn't do ANYTHING about it. I called them and requested a slower speed limit during the migration through a short stretch of highway and nothing has happened yet. If people had to pay for critters they might pay more attention but I don't see it happening. Someone will have to die before they lift a finger I guess. People don't seem to mind cars hitting trophy animals as much as wolves picking them off. What's the difference? It's dead.

See post: BIG BUCK DEAD, for more details. THis buck hung out in the western part of SLC, near U-111. It was hit last weekend crossing the road from one parcel of private land to another. Its too bad. I watched this buck this summer and was looking forward to watching him this winter.

Awesome buck though!

Speed limits slow people down...yeah right. How 'bout people slowing down because it's the right thing to do. Better yet, let me go in and thin the herd a little bit.

TFinalshot:

You seem to assume that people are intentionally running over deer. If you have ever hit a deer, or know someone who has, you know that it causes a tremendous amount of damage to your vehicle and can cause injuries/death. In addition, anyone who has lived in deer country knows how difficult this can be to avoid -- one second the road is clear, the next second there is a deer standing there. Many, many people have been injured/killed trying to avoid deer in the road. In fact, we were always instructed that if you can't stop the vehicle in time, it is much safer to hit the animal than to try to swerve around it. Many times the collision is impossible to avoid.

The problem here is not a new one, but as development encroaches futhter into deer habitat, expecially winter range, the problem will continue to grow.

LAST EDITED ON Nov-16-06 AT 12:04PM (MST)[p]YOu must be kidding me. I completely agree with you, but what does what you've said have to do with paying the true cost?

I've lived in deer country my entire life, I see dead dear on almost a daily basis. Over the last three years I've even see at least 1 motercycle deer accident that has caused death to both the deer and biker. I also see cows and horses along side the road about one per week.

All are accidents, no one intends to hit them, but what does that have to do with paying for your own damages? Most people dont go around hitting each other with cars either, but still if you do, youre responsible, that's why there's insurance.

Do you propose that the public just continue to subsidize the killing of wildlife, both by allowing the people to build new homes on winter range or by just looking the other way when they are hit with cars? What about a grizzly bear? Shoot it, even it it's chasing you, and you get jail time, hit it with a car an you dont get a fine. People kill animals, cars dont. Make the people responsible for the accident.

Why not?

Should we do nothing?

maybe we could ask the deer nicely to stay in the same place or build crossing bridges for the deer that want to cross the roads so the deer dont get hit.

i still haven't got my paycheck any you said it was coming. have you seen my stapler?

"Make the people responsible for the accident."

Isn't that kind of an oxy-moron in itself? How can anybody be responsible for 'accidents'. If they were intentional, it removes them from this category completely and then you have something.

It is sad that so many animals are killed every day by vehicles. And nothing any of us do or say is going to prevent it. The population will keep growing and more wildlife will lose it's home.

It's sad that people keep building homes and that it adversely affects wildlife. But it doesn't matter where you build, it's going to affect something. The plain and simple fact is that people are priority...

Tony,

I understand what you are trying to say...but look at the unintended consequences.

If you enact your new "tax" for accidentally killing wildlife, where do you draw the line ?

Who sets the value on the animal ? What defines a trophy ? Will killing a milk lipped button horn or doe be fined as much as a trophy ? What if DNA proves it's a descendent of the Broder buck ?

You're talking a whole new level of buearacracy.

Now... How about hunting ? A hunter takes a trophy mule deer...should he also have to pay the "tax" ? After all, he killed it...he paid a license fee, but wait, it wasn't thousands of dollars...but he still killed it...

I have 2 pictures of this buck taken by a friend of my Future brother in law. I have to shrink them down to get the server to take them. If anyone knows the secret to getting a bigger picture through let me know.

T,
To take your arguement on another tangent:

I'm just minding my own business driving down the highway when one of the state's deer runs out in front of me. Maybe my daughter gets horribly disfigured in the accident. I lose time from work. It cost thousands of dollars in medical expenses. Not to mention my vehicle is totaled. And you want me to pay for the deer. GIVE ME A BREAK!!!!!

Why shouldn't the state have to pay me when I hit a deer or elk. The game animals are the property of the state, regulated by the state, owned by the people of the state.

The only way I see to prevent vehicle animal collisions is to get rid of cars. Or only let them drive in town. No highway driving.

How would you fine people?

Is a four point worth $500.00?
A rag horn $200?
A booner? Now thats gotta be worth at least, $5000? Wouldn't you say?

How about the little old lady driving to Altamont to visit her favorite nephew. When all at once the Nomad buck jumps in front of her. Her 1975 Hornet is totaled and the peach cobbler in the back is ruined.

What are you gonna fine her?

In Utah... the deer is worth 75.00 bucks if I remember right. Anyone else who fills out a DI-9 know if that is right? Doesnt seem like much tho :(

use a program (like photoshop) that has a "save for web" option. this will optimize it and give you that same photo in about a 8x6 with good resolution under 100k.

most free photo editing programs may not have this feature. if they dont look for somewhere you can change the quality from like 100% to maybe 70%, hardly noticble, but decreases the file size dramatically.
