NM 2b

Not very good. All 5 days were warmer than burning hell. Lots of chili dinks and NO pisscutters.

That doesn't sound too good. I was always wondering and I've heard that the weather plays a big deal for this unit. Theridge, which season did you hunt?

Alot of deer but No Big bucks was taken or seen, It looks like the weather missed the season by a few days. Any one have a good story about their hunt.

I have a buddy that guides in the area and they took a 194, also have a friend that his wife took about a 170.

Those sound like nice bucks. I guess your best bet is to try and get drawn for the 3rd rifle season. I wonder what the hunting is like there? Plenty public land? Are there lots of hunters to bump into?

LAST EDITED ON Nov-21-06 AT 09:13AM (MST)[p]I hunted last year third season and bucks were everywhere, I passed a dozen or so bucks first day in the 160-170 class. I nailed this 191 5/8 B&C buck on the second day.

This year my buddies that live and guide there said it was pathetic. Tons of deer and small bucks. Biggets in the 160 to 170 class. All hunters passed, no booners sighted.

I will put in for the third hunt as a first choice every year, when you hit the weather perfect it is a Premimum hunt.

I already can't wait for next season to enter in on the draws. 2b late rifle season will be my first choice as well. For 08, I booked a muley hunt in Wyoming, so hopefully can bag a nice one there.

CK2128,

Thanks, I never get tired of talking about that buck. Kinda cheesy to post last years buck...but hey....only so often your blessed with a big one!

I kinda want to try tracking those hudge bucks in 2C but can't seem to get away from the large numbers of deer in 2B.

Anyhow, good luck with WY, I'm looking into hunting there for the first time in 07.

Marc

I haven't heard too much about Wyoming muleys, but I think it's worth a try and I can't wait. I'm still waiting to tag my first muley as I just got into getting into draws and what not this year; which is why I finally broke down and booked an outfitter for 08 to ensure I do get to go somewhere at least sometime. For 07, I will play my odds once again for Colorado and New Mexico. Maybe with 1 pp I can get drawn in Colorado, but I might still just wait on CO and build more preference points. And of course New Mexico is a complete gamble as to getting drawn or not.

ck,

I live in CO and hunt here and seveal other states each year. I have trophy areas I return to in each state. Just looking for an easy to draw area in WY for my teen age son and I to go and mow some buks with rifles. I am primarily a bowhunter, however there's a custom .270 WBY being built right now that's going to be itching next Oct-Nov. My son is tired of getting skunked with a bow. He just killed an antelope with his rifle, that first taste of success ruined him. He believes guns are way effective...it's not about how with him, it's about game on the ground. Anyhow, let me know if you ever draw 2B, I'll help you all I can. I lived there for six years and know it well. I return to hunt unit 2 for elk, deer and turkey almost every year.

If I ever draw 2b, I'll definitely contact you. Is the best way to get in touch with you via monstermuleys or personal email?

Hey there Marc. I remember your buck from Eastmans, and you shouldn't ever get tired of that deer , I love that buck and 2B is just awesome. I actually re read your story just a few weeks ago , love reading hunts from NM let alone the 2s'.I hunted 2B Jan of 05 with great snow , and I too am a believer of this unit having the biggest bucks and the most deer if the weather is right. This year I hunted unit 38 in Oct for a muzzle loader hunt and as expected alot of deer but was blown away from how many fork horned bucks we saw. I don't know how well they will fair from the past rifle hunts and what 2007 has in store for them but I'm thinking in another two years theres going to be a steadier number of mature bucks state wide.
Congrats on your great buck and maybe someday we'll cross paths in the Rosa....

Thats a great buck there Marc. You look kinda familiar. Did you live in NM awhile back? I think you and I may have shot in the same group at a 3D shoot at Fenton Lake a long time ago.
Anyway, congratulations on a great buck.

Raptor,

Ahh, Fenton Lake.....The good old days! One of my all time favorites. One of the coolest courses I've ever shot. Probably was me. I started off in mens Bowhunter free style (Pins) and then moved up to open and ultimately Pro. But back then I was shootiing pins.

96,97,98, 99 were the years I was there. Archie Nixon was the King pin in those days of New Mexico 3-D I believe 99 was the last year of the shoot right?

I lived in Aztec at the time.

Marc

Fenton Lake shoot was pretty cool...as well as the Red River shoot. I sent you a PM.
