I read a post talking about all the inferiour bucks on the L.E. units in utah, and this is my solution.
I think it would be a good idea to have a late archery hunt for all the big 2 and 3 point deer, this would be held anytime from nov. to mid jan. (I know some would be agenst a rut hunt), anyone who draws this tag would be required to contact the fish and game when an animal is harvested.
I also belive there wouldnt be as many mistakes as there would be if it was a rifle hunt (such as people shooting the wrong deer and then leaveing it to rott) due to you haveing to be close to the animal.
I spend alot of time in the bookcliffs and know there is alot of mature bucks that are just big 24" 2x3s and 3x4s that will never be bigger than a 24" buck and will never grow those extra tines.
I also see alot of people with tags pass on these big bucks and shoot a young 18-24" 4x4 just because he is a 4point, now this buck given the chance to grow could have been a monster that we all dream about.
I also think people will be more willing to shoot a big 2 point if they know they are not allowed to shoot a 4point.
Anyway thats something that I think will help the deer herds gain genetic stability, and allow more opertunity for the hunters to hunt these units. Tell me your opinons.
