Well....it's time to start planning for next year for me.

Hope you all had/are having a good season. Seen some nice photos on here.......................

I am interested in harvesting an above avg buck.....180 plus.
My points are building quickly...at 6 now... I was thinking about central/eastern part of the state, but I can't get that area around Denio outta my head. I had a NV Bull tag last year in Central/eastern NV and was dissapointed at how few good bucks I saw....even though I was there during the buck rut.......

Any input from anyone who knows the area above Winnemucca???
General info please, not looking for your hidey holes....

Thanks

Mark

I hunted 051 this year and after 8 days of hard hunting at the end of the season I took a decent buck but I never saw anything over 160 the whole time. it's an ok hunt but I wouldn't say it's a trophy hunt, for 180+ I'd look elsewhere.

051 has some good bucks, but you definately gotta hunt for them. i'll post some pics from my '06 hunt if i can.

Thanks guys. I have thought about 051 too. would love to see your bucks.

How were the birds...I hear there are plenty of them around too.

Anyone for 031, 034, 035???

Being it is so hard to get some of the tags, hopefully I can get some insight.........at least 2-7 years for a non-res like me....

Thanks again.

Mark

after looking at the odds of draw for some of the higher profile units, quickly figured out we were never gonna draw. nevada is very stingy with the tags for non-res. even the residents we spoke to said they can only pull a tag every three or four years which to me is total BS. so we began to explore some other options. 051 peaked our interest. spoke with the biologist (Ed Partee out of winnumucca) and he led us to believe that the deer herd and antler growth had been on a downward trend due to drought conditions (and cats) for several years. however, the past two winters/springs had brought good moisture and things were starting to improve with a few trophy class deer being taken in the Santa Rosa wilderness the past couple seasons. long story short, we applied for the hunt and drew the tags.
All feedback and advice told us to concentrate on the high country of the wilderness area. in three scouting trips to the area, we found two good bucks, one of which was a for sure shooter in my book, 27-28" typical with deep forks on all four corners and decent mass. good chance that buck would gross in the 180 or better realm. so we returned to hunt the area this buck was found in. Never saw him again. What i did find was a 26" wide, tall, heavy, deep forked old 5x5 with a 10 1/2" drop tine which i was able to take. one of my better bucks. we spent twelve days total in the unit backpack hunting, hiking in and out of the wilderness as our supplies demanded. during that time, we saw two other bucks that were the equal of that buck (at least) but were not able to take those animals. returned for the last week of the season and again, found a very good buck (i believe this buck was pushing the 30" or better mark at least, one front fork was weak though) but this critter must have dug a hole to china and went underground cuz we were never able to locate him after the stalk.
if you choose to apply for the hunt, (and six points should get you the tag), be advised that to get a shot at the better deer in the area you WILL work your ass off. the Santa Rosa wilderness is no walk in the park and everyone we spoke with who knew anything (including some from this site, my thanks to you) also knew that the biggest bucks are taken in the highest nastiest country. leave the four wheelers at home for this trip, it's either hike and hunt for the trophy or go for a pleasure cruise on the quad and shoot a pepperoni buck. if you do hike in, you will have some awesome mule deer country to yourself. the four wheeler army were crying the forked-horn blues and their eyes almost popped put of there heads when they saw what i drug off the mountain.
good luck to you wherever you hunt.

I think you're right about the wilderness being the best but I didn't go down prepared for that. I hunted the desert and the high country I could get to. I thought the last week of season with the rut coming on might be good but what I didn't count on was how hard they had been hunted ealier in the season. guys were shooting anything with horns I couldn't believe it, I guess they were so afraid of getting skunked they were wacking dinks. 90% of the deer I saw were close to the quakeies and even when I hiked off the road an hour before daylight they were in bed within minutes of daylight and about an hour before dark was all the time you had to catch them out. I'm not sure the genetics are the greatest down there from what I saw either, more spike yearlings than anywhere I've ever been and lots of shallow forked bucks. not a bad hunt but not the best tag I've had for sure.

Just like any area you have to put in your time and sometimes still come up short thats hunting i have been in that area all my life i found the deer i wanted drew the archery tag last year and it still took me 7 days to locate him with no success the biggest deer i have seen in that area have all been down low and leave the area opening day.
It's amazing to watch the deer a day or two before the opener leave the area and to see all the trucks and 4-wheelers buzzing around on and off the roads i have seen this twice now.

Deer populations are down north of Winnemucca. I agree with Sherman that a lot of the bigger bucks hang out low and are pretty nocturnal. I was watching a real nice buck all summer in 35 and he dissapeared when bow season opened up. There are still some nice bucks in these units, but they are few and far between in my opinion.

I have talked to a few people over the years that drew 032 nonresident with less points but the deer populations are worse there than 051 but it has gotten much better,
in my opinion it isn't weather thats killing the herds in both areas.
Great fishing and scenery in both areas doesn't get much better.

Thats a great buck from 051. I have thought about that area a bit and do intend to pack in If I choose that unit for sure. I have heard the same....it's a demanding hunt. I don't mind.....

Any takers re unit 031?

Congrats on waiting six years for a nevada tag!! I would love to give you a hand with your hunt. I have four areas in northern nevada that I have seen deer over 180. I am an archery hunter and see these deer every year but have a tough time getting on them because of the open terrain. I seem to get to 100 befor they bust me each time. Any way...E mail me at [email protected]. I would love to see one of these nice bucks taken befor they start to regress. One deer in particular that one of my budies missed this year was over 37 inchs wide and a perfect four point with mass and 10 to 12 inch deep forks. He missed the deer by a hair at 118 yards. When the deer started to walk away you could tell he was so old he walked with all cripled. He was also with 6 other deer in the 160 to 190 range but they all looked small next to this buck. Look forward to talking to you soon.
