Utah Spike Elk Hunt

Hi, I am hunting elk for the first time this season and got a utah spike tag.

I plan to hunt central or southern UT and do alot of hiking and camping in the backcountry to get away from roads and other hunters.

I've read a couple books on elk hunting but am still struggling to figure out how to get started with picking an area to hunt and then understanding how elk tend to move and feed through thier range.

What kind of country should I focus on? What should I know about spike behavior that will help me locate them?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I would follow the herds, the spikes don't get to hang with the bigger bulls very often. Find the cows and you can find the spikes. I have called in spikes, and I haven't been able to, so try both. Find an area with good numbers, hunt it year after year so you get an idea what happens when they are pressured, when it snows, etc, and you will more sucessful more often than moving areas year after year chasing the "hot spots"

Pick yuour area and go down a few times late september and the week before the hunt starts. find the elk on those trips and friday night before the hunt starts as well. Just do some scouting right before the hunt and you should be able to find your self a spiker

It was a big bodied 2 point.
