Well, what are the odds? My buddy calls me this morning to see what my plans were for the weekend. I told him that my wife and I are expecting our first baby ( Sunday due date). Oh well, he says. I asked what he meant by that. He tells me that he had a guy drop out and wanted to know if I wanted a Jicarilla Res mule deer tag .For Free! Well, sure I would, but if I took it, I would certainly go straight to hell. Atleast I found someone to take it. It wasn't very hard. I hope he has a great hunt. I have other things to attend to. But man, what are the odds of getting a free tag for the Jicarilla two days before your wife is due? God has tested me. I hope he isn't a mule deer hunter.

You, sir, are an oak!

Wow......go buy lotto.......at least you made the right decision. Not sure I could of, not without alot of pissing and moaning for a long time......

It will come around in the long run....karma.

Keep us updated

I was butchering up a friends 360" bull Elk when my wife's water broke at home.
Bro in law took her to the hospital.
I made it in time for my son's birth, but I'm still living it down...

WTF???

YOU CAN HAVE A KID ANYTIME!!!

AND WHAT ABOUT FRIENDS,I DON'T EVEN GET A CALL???

THE ONLY bobcat THINKING YOU MIGHT OUGHT TO COUNT BACKWARDS 9 MONTHS & 3 MINUTES & FIGURE YOUR SEASONS OUT!!!

An oak, huh? I'll take that as a compliment. I am nuts. She never said I couldn't go, but there was that glint in the eye. I knew that could mean big trouble. If its a boy...I'm naming him Apache No Deer. Everyone can just live with it. I'll post pics of anything those guys bring back. I'm gonna have a drink now. And BFE, I wish I were joking. It would be easier to sleep tonight.

LAST EDITED ON Nov-21-06 AT 08:12AM (MST)[p]It was hard - but you made the right call. I am sure you know why. You just have to count that you will be rewarded for your sacrifice in the long run. Of course - you could have convinced you wife to have the labor induced - they did it with all three of my kids. We knew exactly when the last two would be born for three weeks to a month in advance. You could have had your cake and eat it too - in fact it may not be too late! INDUCE! INDUCE! INDUCE! After all - your mother-in-law is going to probably be there for the first week after the birth - you will just be in the way.

I'm going to have to agree with bobcat on this one. Everyone on this site should be counting backwards and planning things out. Both of my girls birthdays are in spring and summer. Hasn't caused a problem yet. But you did the right thing. There are a lot of things in life more important than hunting.

LAST EDITED ON Nov-21-06 AT 04:12PM (MST)[p]LOL, Apache No Deer. That's funny. That would be a tough position to be in glad it was you and not me.

Actually it would be cheaper to buy your own tag next year, divorce costs a lot more then a Jic tag!

Kind of like what I call "unrelated expenses" to my out of state elk hunts - a good example is the year I left and called home to find out my wife bought a new solid oak dining room table for $800. Sneaky

Don't really know wha I would have done if I were you , BUT, planning ,planning, planning, and then some more planning. What Imean is both my daughters were born in summer , my wedding anniversery was yesterday but there are not any hunts that I go on as I mostly bow and muzzleloader hunt. I remember my wife first wanted to get married at the first of October(during muzzleloader elk hunt), I told her it would be crazy weather maybe rain/sleet type stuff and November would be much better. Sept and Oct are off limits.....

I did manage an elk hunt and a deer hunt before it go too close. Then I pushed it and went to Colorado on a friend's deer hunt. Thought that one was really gonna do it. I could not possibly see this opportunity coming up. Last minute deal. My buddy that is taking my place came by to borrow a few things. He has NO CLUE what he is in for. I'm quite certain that he has never even seen deer like that before. We'll see if he connects. I know the other guys that are going are good hunters and they are likely to do well. Let's see what happens. They leave on Friday.

Dude your crazy. If it happened to me, my YL (young lady) would have to understand after all someone on this site is right your mother in law will be around for at least a month.
You don't have anything the baby wants or needs unless you have a rubber booby. LOL. A free Jic tag? I think DonV's math is off this hunt would probably cost more than a divorce (upwards of 10k). I'll give it to you though for turning it down. Now you will have something on your wife for years to come....remember the time I turned down a once-in-a-lifetime tag???? I hope Karma works in your favor.

Sheezze- A jic mule deer tag, do you know how big the muley's are up there? Sorry I'm just envyous of your luck. How did you manage to get a free tag anyway when they could have got thousands for it?

JO

yes I am crazy.
I'm sitting here, thinking of my friend that is going in my place. He has never killed a deer before.
He is probably on his way as I write this.
and yes I am crazy.
I am quite aware of the size of the bucks in that area.
The hunts on the Jic are 12k. Their auction tags are 30k min bid.
I take off now and I jeopardize all future hunting.
Unspoken certainty!
Plus, if my friend comes back empty handed. I can give him sh*t forever.

Slow down a minute and take a breath. You absolutely did the right thing. Imagine how your wife would feel if you left her at a time like this. Priorities man.

I could have hunted the jic every year for the last 4 years for what divorce cost me, and then some. You did the right thing. I would have went hunting tho...lol.

I forgot to ask if you guys know why divorce is so expensive ? BECAUSE ITS WORTH IT !!! Lol Gary

Dude, c'mon man I'm 17 and my family thinks I'm crazy that I already know that all future children's birthdays will be between Jan 1 and Aug. 1!!! This includes weddings and stuff of that nature. haha BTW, how did ur buddy due? And I guess I'll ask the more important question...

How did the birth of your child go? Hope all went well.

IF YOUR GOING TO BE A BEAR BE A GRIZZLY BEAR!You didn't train her right. My wife's water broke and we lived in northern Cali at Lake Berryessa. We had to go to Napa to go to the hospital about 35 miles away. This is up in the mountains and deer season was on. I grabbes my rifle and my wife and we started hauling ass to the hospital. On the way I spotted a big blacktail buck up the mountain about 250 yards. I stopped jumped out and shot the buck. My wife had the nerve to say hurry up a gut the damn deer and lets go. I didn't gut him and left. As soon as I got to the hospital I called a buddy of mine and told him where the deer was and he picked it up and brought it to the hospital so I could tag it. He then took it home for me.That was my first child . It was a girl and the buck was a nice four-point. That litle girl killed her first buck on her first day of season when she was 12. I am a pretty much dedicated hunter don't you think?

Thirtyincher.......Tag your animal IMMEDIATELY upon kill and dont shoot from the damn road! Someday your "dedication" may get you in BIG trouble.

IF YOUR GOING TO BE A BEAR BE A GRIZZLY BEAR!For all you idiots out there. I was 19 at the time .I am 60 years old now. I think I know by now what is right and what is wrong.Mtn miller i'll bet you have done alot worse than that!I guess you holyer than now boys have never done anything wrong before. I was just telling a little about an incident I had when I was a teenager. Sorry I offended you. I better go back to Californis and turn myself in. You guys take the cake.

Oh yeah, I have done some stupid things that I regret. I will not be posting these things and tying "dedication" to it, but that's just me. Maybe just the way I read it, but sounds like you were pretty proud of the event. That is what I do not understand. As was mentioned, it was a different era and one I am not familiar with, my apologies.

Apology accepted. You really set things straight with your young wife, didnt ya? Boy, what "nerve" she had. We treat our ladies with a little more respect in MT. Course, you dont see very many hunters as "dedicated" as they are in California either. Just what I need, another old fruitcake in the mail for Christmas.
