After 10 years of of putting in for this hard draw i finally drew out the first year of points go figure. I thought this hunt was not what i was thinking it was going to be. If you wanted to see a ton of bucks this hunt is for you. If you want to kill a 165 to 170 class buck at best this hunt is great but dont expect to shoot anything bigger. I guess i might of had way to high of standards when i drew out. On the worst day i had, i still saw 20 bucks and the best was around 60 bucks. I hunted 10 days saw well over 250 bucks and never saw a buck over 165 to 170 in the prime of the rut. Paid a rancher to hunt witch gave us 50,000 acers to hunt to. He had big hay feilds with hunderds of deer in them but lots of dinker bucks. I did not even count all of those deer in the fields because they were more like livestock than a wild deer. I saw alot of deer shot and most were tiny. The top pic is my buck and that was the best scoring deer i saw killed. I was just under the impression this was a trophy area but i guess i was wrong. Still had a blast and for seeing #s you could not ask for more. What was the biggest downer for the trip was i never even talked to one person who even saw a big buck. Heck my Dad went to Co to a unit that takes 1 to 2 points to get and out of there group they shot 3 bucks bigger than mine including a 191 typical. We all waited to the last day to shoot thinking than big one was coming but just did not happen. I have a late Nv muzz tag in a week in a half so maybe i can find that buck that has been in my dreams now for 29 years. Sorry if i sounded negative maybe i just have read to much horn porn and look at this site to much lol.

congrats on the bucks! they are not bad at all. good luck on the nv hunt

Heck i might as well tell because i am not going back and even if i wanted to i could not because of the new point system.unit 119 Well i might be able to get drawn again when i am on a oxygen tank. lol There was a ton of big three points and big forkenhorns runing around breeding most of the does. It was sad to see.The worst part was most guys were shooting 18 to 22 inch 2to3 year old bucks so they could say they shot a 4point instead of takeing one of the older messed up antler bucks. My whole plan was to take one of those messed up bucks out on the last day and the buck i got steped out and took off on a dead run so i did not have any time to size him up. He looked pretty good running away so i dumped him. Turned out to be about the 3 biggest buck i saw. At least he was 4 to 5 years old. So i felt a little better about it.(he sure did look 2 inches wider than what he was running with his ears back. Dont they all. lol)Still had a good time. Beats work.

All the bucks were between 24 and 25 inches. Every body should go to the school of how to make a forken horn look 30 inches. My buck is in the low 160s that should give you a good idea on the size.

Hey, nice looking bucks good ones in my book. Sounds like you had a good time and away from work can't beat that.

LAST EDITED ON Nov-22-06 AT 06:41PM (MST)[p]A couple of those guys look like they're going to pop a shoulder out of its socket stretching those arms out like that. Not sure how you define trophy area, but I think resident draw odds are one of the best indicators for potential. Odds for a resident drawing 119 is just over 28%. Not a high demand area in my opinion. 102 is around 10%. You start getting less than 20% and you're probably getting into the trophy category. Non residents stats don't mean much because every limpdik and his mother is just looking to draw a tag...

I looked up res draw odds and was surprised to see 28% chance of drawing. I do my homework on hunts like it was my own job but this slipped through the cracks. Carter mag always rates it very high and Mike Eastman said it was a great unit too. I guess for stright #s of deer it is. Still beats work.

Nice bucks and congrats. I'm not sure why everyone does the "chuck adams" pose. Its just funny. They won't bite you(holding arm as far away as possible).
Ditto to what Triple BB says.

Nice bucks! Congrats.

I think for the most part Wyoming's hard to draw areas are way overated.

The draw odds do not accurately reflect the quality of the deer.

Wow, with that many bucks around I would think that there would have to be some bruisers somewhere. I've been running into the same thing here in Nevada. I see lots of bucks but nothing gigantic but at the big buck contests there are always some big boys in the contest. Its funny how you don't see any really big deer but when you get snow the the big boys come out of the wood work. I'm beginning to think that they are nocturnal and stay treed up in the daytime. Anyways, congrats on your bucks and chalk it up as a learning experience. I still think that if you've got little bucks of those numbers then you've got big bucks somewhere. fatrooster.

I touched on this in my post for 128, but the rut hunts do really put the big bucks at peril. You could have 1000 hunters earlier not be as hard on the upper end bucks as 100 hunters in the rut. I really think if you are looking for real whopper, you want limited entry October rifle hunts. The rut hunts are great to give hunters a good chance at a nice buck, but if really big ones are your cup of tea, you do not want a area that has had rut hunting going on for very long. Nothing wrong with the more hunters having a shot at a nice one, if that is what they want, just realize the tradeoffs.

Thanks for the kind words. Now its time for my Nv hunt and lots of big bucks. Thats what i can dream about every night tell it opens and i have to wake up and look at dink heads. Still better than any day at work. I drew unit 21 muzz.

I hunted this unit back in it's hayday. It, along with the rest of the bighorn basin has suffered through nearly 10 years of drought resulting in very poor range condition. These desert bucks have to live 365 days eating very poor nutritionally valued vegetation and survive the winter. This is one of the major factors for the skinny smaller antlers.

I drove through this unit last weekend and saw similar little bucks. I did see a bruiser 6x6 in another limited quota unit in the area.

Here is a photo of the buck I got back in '97 in this unit. I saw 5 other bucks of similar size.

This unit would come back if only they could get more precipitation.

Aaron,

Don't feel bad. I had a similar hunt this year and I was in Colorado. I burned 10 preference points and only shot a 173" buck. You can bet I'll be in a 1-3 point unit next time in Colorado. The only thing the late season did for me was block the roads with snow so I couldn't access the best areas. Even when I hiked in all I saw was big 3x3's and crab claws like you did. I can hunt like that for 1-3 points.
