LAST EDITED ON Aug-16-11 AT 08:24AM (MST)[p]My cousin is going to try and get this bull this weekend on the archery elk hunt. Any ideas what he might score?
He has Weak thirds, but everything else looks good. His 4ths are really long and his whale tails are pretty even and long. I was thinking 315-320?

Thanks for the help.

LAST EDITED ON Aug-16-11 AT 08:16AM (MST)[p]I think you are pretty close. Maybe a little high. 300ish.

Yeah that is the problem this will be a LE area. My cousin drew it with only 4 points though. I will post a video in a sec that show him a little better.

Nice bull, just a little weak on his thirds, but has some width and main beam length to cove it. I'd put him north of 315, but south of 330.

Sweet maybe my guess wasn't so far off then. The best part about this bull is we could drive the truck right up to him if my cousin was to get him. We have seen a few nicer bulls, but they are a 3-4 mile pack in and then pack them out if he gets one. With it being close to 90 deg this weekend I think he would have a better chance of not loosing any meat from heat if he was to get this bull.

LAST EDITED ON Aug-16-11 AT 11:03AM (MST)[p]I'm not an expert scorer by any means but I will share what I think in general.
I don't think he's a mature bull, my guess would be a 4 maybe 5 year old bull. As such he won't have much more than 20 inches of mass per side and his main beams will be less than 50?. With most of the elk I have measured, the distance on mature bulls from skull cap to end of nose is 17? this not being a mature bull I would say that measurement is 16? so based on that, here?s what I come up with from your pictures.
Mass 22/side=44?
MainBeans 2x46=92?
G1 2x14=28 (in the one picture the right looks a bit longer then the left but I will just average)
G2 2x11=22? (his left g2 looks not to be more than 9? and I can't really get a good look at his left in any of these pictures so will guess that total they are not more than 11? each and that's likely giving an inch or so)
G3 13X2=26?
G4 16X2=32
G5 2x11?=22
Inside spread 38??in the 2 front on pictures looks to be wide as any
Total up 304?

I would guess that 300? mark is pretty close +/- 8pts. I'm sure he would make P&Y and on any but the top few LE Units, I think a guy would be foolish to pass him up with a bow boradside at 30yds.

I guess the best way to tell will be to get him on the ground. Hopefully I will have some pics to post up after this weekend.

Thanks for the info guys.

Well my cousin got within 100 yds of this bull Sat. morning and the wind was swirling everywhere. Needless to say the bull winded him and got out of there. I was watching the whole thing through the spotting scope and wouldn't you know it the bull came within 50 yds of me after he winded my cousin.

Here is some pics I got of him as he ran by me.

My uneducated guess (with the new pics) is right around 320".

Only my 2 cents, for what it's worth.

good luck with the hunt,
Zeke

PS: It's interesting that in the last 2 weeks, all the branched antler bulls I've seen, have gone from full velvet to polished. The spikes are still fuzzy.
