My grandpa drew a Monroe rifle tag he is 88 years old but I am worried about it being so hard for him I an just wondering if any one could help point me in an area where I could help him get an elk with out killing him? I have calling experience so we are hoping to call one in to him. He is still active! Thanks for your time guys

PM me after Labor day and I may have a couple places I can point you to. I need to wait and see what shows up.

Early Rifle? No problem. Monroe is fairly well roaded. Just get up way early and cruise around for bugles in the dark. Find one to go after. He shouldn't have to hike far.

good to know i need to not hike him to much. he had a lot of points (over 15) so he wants to have fun thanks everyone for the help

There are a lot of places you could actually go. I was there last season with my dad on his Monroe elk hunt and he's 76 years old and not able to get around very easy either. He killed a 360 bull over by the Ranger Station. Very easy for him. Killed him in a meadow with a bunch of cows. Where we had to go was all flat ground. The Dairies is another place I'd spend a lot of time especially on the opening once the bulls get pressured they'll move out of there. Windy ridge is another good place. A little rougher there thou. anyways good luck! here's some pics of his bull.

That really is a huge help thanks so much! Great great bull of a lifetime! Did you call him? Or stalk him?

Well we heard him bugle from about a mile way so we got as close to him as we could without tipping him off and tried to call him in the rest of the way but he just wasn't havin it. He would not leave his cows. We'd bugle and he'd bugle back but he would not budge. So we stalked him as close as we dared which was about 250 yards but couldn't get him in a clearing long enough to get a shot cause he was to worried about his cows. It was fun to sit there and watch him. And after about an hour of playing around with him he finally stepped in to a opening and my dad made a great shot. First shot hit him a little too far back and he took two step forward and just stood there. And we could tell he was hurtin. Dad took a second shot and down he went. It was a great hunt and one that my dad hasn't stopped talking about since and probably never will.

LAST EDITED ON Aug-27-11 AT 07:27AM (MST)[p]you have to be careful by the gaurd station because there is a lot of private property around it. there are some good areas on the south side of the mountain. I have been told bulls cross from the dutton and the beaver but that would be hard to prove. And all of Magleby's is private.
