What Would You Do!!!!

A situational question not an ethical one.....
I would imagine every bowhunter on here and many rifle hunters have encountered this so I am wondering what most of you would do in the following situation...

You are hunting public ground for elk and not long after daylight you hear what is obviously another hunter basically incessantly blowing a cow call. The other hunter doesn't seem to be moving, just sitting there blowing the end off his call so to speak. Not necessarily right on top of where you are but within earshot. You believe there are elk in the area....sign, etc. What do you do????? Hunt elsewhere? Just try to ignore him and continue doing what you are doing? I'm simply curious how others handle this circumstance as many if not most of us at least at times hunt areas where there is competition from other hunters.

I would sneak away from the hunter and continue hunting in another direction. If the elk are there, they wont be for long with his uncontrolled calling. Get the wind right and move further away from the roads would be my choice.

I am with WHY on this one. Start bugling and call him in. Find out what his plans are for hunting, and that way you can avoid him.

Enjoy the moment and relive the memories.

I may or may not have bugled in hunters on two different occasions last year... one was funny as hell cause he was on a wheeler on a gated road and me and my buddy laid down in the brush and messed with this dude for a solid 20 minutes from 400 yds away or so... even got to the point where he knocked an arrow! We were rolling! lol

The other one I felt bad cause I saw two hunters and once they started down the nasty canyon I was in I saw it was a guy and his young son... I hit an open spot ripped a bugle and waved my arms to let them know the bugle was me and not an elk so don't waste their time with the nasty hike!

Personally in your situation I'd just keep hunting... a lot of times pressured elk will just ignore those crappy calls if they are a good ways away instead of move out!

I say sneak in on the guy's position. Get to about 100 yards away, or closer if you can get behind him and get your sneak on. Then once you are well concealed right behind his position, let loose with a rip snorting bugle. Make him think he has called in the king of the elk!!

Then just sit back and laugh your ass off!!

I had the same thing happen last year. This guy was bugling his ass off in the bottom of the canyon below me. It sounded aweful. I'm not kidding when I say it was the worst bugling I have ever heard. After him bugling about 30 times one after another I had had enough and worked my way down to him to talk to him. When I got within about 60 yards the big 6 point bull ran out of the bottom because of my loud walk down to talk to "him".

I remember hearing a hunter toot on the call....so I thought. It sounded so stupid I thought he must have been playing with the call rather than actually trying to call elk. Next thing I knew, a 4x5 raghorn walked around the corner. Boy, was I fooled by that stupid caller.

BTW; I'd move on and leave the dude by himself.

My grandma drew a Bookcliffs tag back in the mid 80's. She had never really hunted elk in her life, let alone played with a bugle. My uncle was the main force behind the hunt, guiding her and helping her out. Well one night he had to leave for town early so it was just her and my grandpa (who had never really hunted elk either though he was a die-hard muley hunter) left in camp. Well, they were sitting around the fire and heard a bugle pretty close so my uncle had left his bugle there and told her to "practice" with it. Well she had no clue what she was doing but blew on it anyway and damned if she didn't call in a huge 5 pt right in to camp! It tore up trees all the way down the ridge and and when it was about 100 years out my grandpa went and got her rifle. So she was standing by the fire with her rifle and grandpa was leaning on the grill of the motorhome listening and the damn thing ended up running between her and the motorhome and my grandpa. Obviously she couldn't shoot then but she gave the call another blow and the bull came charging back! She was able to get off a quick shot and harvested a nice 300 inch or so 5 pt.

Sometimes ignorance is bliss!

HOOK 'EM!

I'd continue with your hunt and keep him down wind. If you can call him to you mid day, then you'll know what his plan is for the rest of the day/ season.
