Elk on Kamas Unit

Any news of Elk on the Kamas unit, particularly Shingle Creek to North Fork area?

I went fishing up at Big Elk Lake yesterday, saw quite a few bow hunters, out on Quads and such, running the jeep trail to the trail head. I used to deer hunt over in Soapstone Basin years ago and all I ever saw was elk and moose. I would like to be about 2 to 3 miles off of any road for the General Season. I would also like to avoid Soapstone since I know it gets hammered with pressure. Am I wrong?

Hammered is an understatement. I hunted it last fall and couldnt believe it.

O--one
B--big
A--ass
M--mistake
A--america

Still I've heard it's a good area, I just can't stand being around people enough to deal with it, much less hunt it. I would almost rather scale a cliff to be a couple miles away, but you gotta go where the game is.

LAST EDITED ON Sep-06-11 AT 10:53AM (MST)[p]Me and my Brother hunted the norther fork opening day. We hiked up about 3 miles and got to a good look out and glassed for 2 hours and only spotted 3 doe. Didn't see a lot of elk sign. There was still a lot of cattle up there running around and and I think they were bringing them down off the hill so that may have effect the amount of animals. We hunted the "City of Soapstone" the next day with the rest of the salt lake valley and did see 9 different bucks and some elk sign but no elk

Yeah, there are still a lot of recreaters out too. I think if the temps drop about 30 degrees in the next couple of weeks that will help.

spent a day hiking around soapstone area, didn't see even a hint of an elk.

I heard the same story from a guy I work with just about an hour ago. Hmmm....

Thanks, I will take any luck I can get. If nothing else I will have covered a ton of miles in the mountains, and I'm okay with that too. I'm sure I will get some fishing in as well.

That area gets hit hard!!!!!! But the elk are in there, like others have said the weather needs to come down a bit....

High of 76 today and low of 47. Predicted 73 and 43 for the next 10 days. Where's my fall switch????

Pray for the cold G. I know you will get in the steep and deep off the beaten path so you will be just fine so long as it starts to cool down. Hopefully Manti will start to liven up. Goin down with C. on Saturday wish us luck.

Good luck man, things are picking up in the South Cache unit. Hopefully that cold weather will start pushing south. It will be great if it's 60 and 30 by the 23rd! It happens overnight every year, this ones not going to be any different! I wanna see pics when you get back!
