There is a pretty big river that basically bisects South Dakota, it goes by the name Missouri River. Everything east of the River is considered East River and the other side, West River.;-)

I hunt West River deer every year, but nearly exclusively, whiteys. What information are you looking for?

Are there some big whitetails in the area? I would like to get one of the any deer tags but they appear much harder to draw. I would definately hunt whitetail if there was the chance at a decent one on public land as I don't have any private access in SD. Any sugestions on which area in west river is a good one for whitetails and public access? thanks, Muley7

West River includes half of the state, so it is hard to give much specific information.

If you are looking for whitetails you might want to concentrate your efforts in areas along one of the major rivers - Misouri, Cheyene, White, etc. They can be found just about everywhere, but these areas have higher densities. Mule deer can be found in every west river unit.

"Big" depends on your definition - 140, 160, 180? If you look in the record books, SD doesn't have near as many book bucks as other states.

Go to the SD GFP website and look at the Sportsmans Atlas for locations of public land. Some units have a lot and some have very little. Units that have a lot of public land are typically harder to draw a license for. In most areas the good public land gets a LOT of presure.

I have been hunting public land in western SD for 30 years. If you want to email me with more specific questions I will share more info off line. Here is a link to a few of the bucks I have taken on public land.
