frustration on Thousand Lake

I decided I would rifle hunt Thousand Lake Mtn for a bull elk, have helped friends in the past get a bull, just love the mountain. However, have scouted 7 days (over 2 weeks) and have only found 1 bull with 3 cows (and that was day 1- can't find now, probably due to cowboys driving cattle down the mountain). Haven't heard a bugle and and found little recent sign (of course 4 days of rainstorms tends to wash everything out.) I can't imagine they've shot all the cow elk all out and therefore bulls have all moved out. Least I can't find any. Any advise???

OR does it look like I need to move over to Fishlake (fight the crowds) and startover. At least on Thousand Lake, I had the whole mountain to myself........ I wander why.

Great post! That should help keep the hunters off Thousand lake! I would throw in how many sheep and ATV riders are all over the mountain also. lol, sorry thats all I see out of this post.

What I see is that the DWR F'd up the thousand lakes-fishlake unit again. They have given out too many elk tags the last two years, Thats bull and cow tags. That mountain can produce some monsters if managed correctly which it is not.

That's where i'm heading. My understanding (talking to biologists today) is that Thousand Lake is more of a transition area for elk migrating from the Tidwells in the winter. They don't have much of a resident elk herd any longer. Elk have been thinned out a bit.

Just seen two bulls on thousand lake and a herd on thousand lake last night!!
