Unit 28 Colorado

I am considering hunting the southern portion of unit 28 in Colorado in 2007. I was wondering if anyone who has hunted it could let me know what the deer numbers are like? Are there a lot of hunters? It looks like a unit where it is possible to get away from the roads. Is it a better area for deer or elk? Not looking for specific areas, just wanted an opinion of the unit overall.

Thanks,
Jody

This unit is mixed country, with low-lying sagebrush basins, irrigated hayfields along the rivers, etc, then sweeps rapidly to high country with primarily lodgepole forests. Forest Service did a lot of timber sales 18-30 years ago, mainly big clear cuts, and they are growing back to varying stages of doghair thickness, but the deer really liked those cuts. Now pine beetle is literally wiping out all the mature stuff, so understory browse is on the increase across the entire unit, but this place is a wildfire waiting to happen. Elk have done exceptionally well in this unit and I'd consider it more of an elk hunt than a deer hunt, though the limited license system has allowed some bucks to grow up here. Expect company as access is pretty easy over most of it, except the wilderness areas on the south end. A lot of the sage ground is private, so get some maps and figure out details before you go. Hope that helps.

Thanks Sneak,
The area in the very southern end of the unit is what I was thinking about, down around Old Baldy. It looks like an area with few roads, so I'm thinking that it will get a little less pressure. It looks like some pretty steep ground, and alot of timber. I've hunted up in 18 the last few years, and the pine beatle situation is the same up there. Alot of the area looks like its 1 lightning strike away from a major forest fire.

Thanks again,
Jody
