Colorado 49 Elk Emergency!

Dropped all my 8 Elk points to get a first season rifle 49 tag. I work overseas with a guy whose sister is married to the 49 Elk guru. And this is the first time in several years I know I am going to be stateside and could apply for the tag knowing I could go. I met the guy who was really a great guy and knew his elk and had downed some big ones. He was a great hunter was really looking forward to hunting with him and excited about the possibility of seeing some big ones and fulfill a lifelong dream of a 300 plus bull.

Well tragically about three weeks ago he died of a massive heart attack. I know my elk hunt pales to his death and its impact on his family but trying to salvage my hunt in some way. His wife gave me contact info of a guy he had hunted with a few times and he is going to share information, but is the first to admit his info is limited.

To complicate matters I have a high country llama wilderness muzzy hunt in New Mexico that season is Oct 8-12 and then straight back to this hunt which is Oct 15-19 or so my pre-hunt scouting time will be limited. I plan on scouting numerous times before my NM hunt to get a lay of the roads and trails.

I am going to have access to llamas and hunt hard and will do anything possible to put a 300 plus bull in my sights.

Anyways, any help would be appreciated and I make a point to help those that help me.

Thanks

Ted

Sorry to hear of the loss of your friend. I wish I could help, but do not know anything about that unit. I would suggest posting your situation in the Colorado forum as well to see if a local guy could point you in the right direction or speak with some unit 49 guides.

Elk Hunter thanks. I have posted in Colorado forum and gotten a few PM's that will help for sure. This guy was the classic modern day Mountain Man....first lived in the area in a YURT was really looking forward to huntng with him.

Always give 110 percent to my hunts this one comes down to just not having the boot leather time to dedicate to knowing a Huge unit.

Myself and 3 friends hunted 1st rifle season 2 years ago in 49. We went 4 for 4 on bulls. I may be able to get you pointed in the right direction.
