Hi,
I am from oregon and i was just woundering how other hunters from the state did this year?? Thanks for yout time hope to see ypour pics

LAST EDITED ON Dec-15-06 AT 01:49AM (MST)[p]Helped my son get a 3x4 and the mrs. get a few shots at a buck. Busted up my knee on the job ended up with tag soup this year.

Did pretty well for elk but this is the mule deer forum so I won't go into specifics.

My ol man and I are non res.but we hunted E. Oregon this year, same unit we drew four years ago and did well then. but this year we got lucky the last day and shot two smaller bucks, we did not see many deer in 6 days hunting and only the 2 bucks the last day.

from my experience oregon had a medium to poor year, as its been for the last several! the guys i hunt with are usually very successful in oregon even in poor years, but this year most of my buddies had a tough time finding game. we have all started hunting several other states and we are constantly shocked and amazed at how much better the game management is. i know i hear a lot of complaining on this site about how bad other states are, but i think oregon takes the cake in poor game management. im sure they are trying, but somehow every other state seems like its doing a lot better even though oregon has some great habitat, and herds that could be increasing.

i have lots of deer and elk around my house, in western oregon. last year i saw 20-22 different blacktail bucks, including 2 decenct bucks, 100-110 inches. this year i saw 6 different bucks, 5 forked horns and 1 little 3 point. i hunted the last 10 days of the rifle hunt on the west side, and saw 17 does and no bucks. saw 2 small forkies driving home after dark.

i got to glass a very nice roosie bull(non-typ 9x10) before the season. (i should have archery hunted!!!) i hunted 4 days, dark to dark, lotsa glassing and walking, and saw no elk, not even a cow. i love to hunt and had fun, but i would really have liked to at least see some elk, or even some small bucks to pass on.

i went on the rifle wenaha branched bull hunt, with a friend that drew the tag. he shot a nice bull, smaller then what he was after, but it was a great hunt. we should have been snowed out of the high country but the temp never got below 40 so we had a full week of hard rain instead. we saw tons of bulls, but didnt see an absolute toad, which was why we were there. this tag is hard to to wait for, and its headed for 15 years even with max points!

sorry this post was so long, im really hoping to hear how other hunters did in oregon!

I'm from Corvallis and hunted Opening week of Archery season and saw a few elk but not much. Oh I was hunting over east by the way. I saw no bucks the entire week I was there. I only hunt on foot and away from roads. The deer that I did see were all does and most didn't even have fawns with them. This was not a good sign to me for years to come. I killed a big 22" inch 4x5 the year before in the area, that's big for the area maybe small to some. I never saw a bull during that whole week. I went back for the last two days and the first morning they were bugling but wanted no part of any calls. I had two near opportunities at cows that first morning but just didn't quite work out. That night I was still hunting along as usual and spotted some elk ahead of me and long story short they fed right into my lap. There were a couple of cows and a spike and I killed the spike when he came out of a small thicket at 15 yards.

I hunted the Mckenzie unit for blacktails during the late season and saw very few deer, not even very much sign. The deer numbers are way down up there from what they were 6 or 7 years ago. I did manage to rattle in a nice 3 pt buck but the shot was tight at 20 yards and resulted in a deflected arrow. Also called in another nice 3 pt. with a doe bleat but this time there wasn't even a shot. It was a very tough year and very discouraging at times. The elk and mule deer situation is getting worse every year over east and I'm fearful of what it will be like in another 5 years. All I'm hoping for is that ODFW will thin the cougars down and the game will come back.

Oregon has awesome habitat and when I get out and walk and walk it's so hard to fathom why there aren't any animals there. We also need to start going to more draw hunts in my opinion. There are far too many archery hunters over east. I always hear people say oh well if you get away from the roads you'll never see anyone. Well for the last couple years I'm in more than a mile down in a hole and have actually run into people and had a conversation with them. To me that shouldn't happen. I should be able to go into the woods and not expect to run into another person when I'm that far away from a road, atleast that's my thought on it.

Oh, meant to attach a pic of my elk and my buck from the year before taken in the same area within less than a 1/4 mile of eachother. I will throw in a pic of a bull I saw before the season but never saw again, same ridge I killed my spike on. I guess it's encouraging to know they're out there.

Hunted archery for deer and shot a little forky only buck I saw all season. I hunted some good areas but just no deer around pretty unusual. Missed a bear the day before archery season opened. Elk huntin second season branched bull tag never saw an elk, trust me I did some walking and tons of glassing kind of disappointing but oh well thats elk hunting. I did shoot a nice 6 point in idaho that place is loaded with elk it was almost heaven elk everywhere. I think this year I am going back to the country I know and check out the old honey holes that seems to hold animals quite often. I am going to colorado in 07 for elk and deer so I won't get to excited here in oregon. I hope they kill a lot of cats this year.

Now, if looking at those photos doesn't warm your heart, nothing will!

CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL!

Hey there Desert, wasn't your wife in Eastmans of Hunting Illustrated with a Desert Big Horn? She looks like the gal in there. Nice pics. Thanks for sharing.

It's always an adventure!!!

Thanks to all of you for information. When i was looking at this i realized that i didnt post how my hunting went as well. This year i archery hunted for both elk and deer passed on seven smaller bucks and a 3X4 at six yards. And elk hunting was delayed because i had to travel out of the state on a fire assignment. And was not able to return home in time to fill either my deer or elk tags. Thats just the way the hunting goes i guess. Still loved all the time.

Hunted public land in Eastern Oregon again this year, but saw more hunters and fewer bucks than I have in over 20 years. But, I did see more bulls(no tag) last year in this same area than I have in quite a while.

Getting to be alot of hunters all over even in the wilderness. We had 16 guys camped around us. we got lucky and took a 25" five point and a 23" 4x3. when we pulled out those 16 other hunters had taken 1 2x2, 1 3x3, a 4x3 and one group were still looking for one they wounded and lost. Over all nothing big. it is getting harder to get away from all of the people.

Shot this decent 4 point in Paulina Unit this year on the third evening, lot of hunters in that unit this year, we saw a lot of deer though not many bucks, the only real benefit of all the people is it pushes the deer around more, giving a better chance to see them, but there really skidish then, especailly during rifle season
