question regarding locating the Bullet Entry

It didn't happen this year, but happened to me the year before. I shot my deer and he droped and didn't move again, but when I got up to him I could not find where the bullet entered. I always aim for the base of the neck/front shoulder as we like to eat the heart and liver so I try to not shoot those, but it was strange that I could not find any entry.

Has this happened to anyone else? It seemed really odd to me.

Base of the skull, right behind or below the ear.

I shot a buck, after searching for about 15-20 minutes for entry. I finely found where only hair was missing and the skin looked like a rub mark. It was on the top of neck about 6" below the skull. No blood no penetration. Just looked like a rub mark on the vertebrae top of the neck. It was a very small scratch.
