Ok, I know there are a lot of hunters out there that dip snuff. I've been dipping Cope for years, but would like to quit spending so much money. By the way, quiting is not a option for me a this point, I have a wife and 3 kids. Ha Ha.

Any suggestion on some good generic bands.

MuleDeerHunter7mm,
I dipped copenhagen for around 10 years. New Years Eve was a year since I quit cold turkey. For me, generic brands were little better than not having any at all. My best advice is to quit for your wife and kids.

15 year dipper here, been cope free for 4 years this month. I second ismith's suggestion, quit for your life, wife & kids!

I have chewed for about 10 years quit 4-months ago. One brand I used that was very similar to copenhagen was HUSKY FINE CUT. Pretty cheap about $2.40 a can.

My buddy stopped a year ago by chewing a tobacco-free snuff..He said it was tough for the first couple of months, then he got used to it..he still chews about a can of that stuff a day..I can find out the brand if you want...

Quiting is not an option cause you have children? Good lord, that is the silliest thing I have ever heard on MM.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT ORAL CANCER

75% of head or neck cancers begin in the mouth
There are 30,000 new cases of oral cancer each year in the U.S.
There are 8,000 deaths yearly (or roughly 1 per hour), which is more than the number of deaths from melanoma or cervical cancer
People who smoke and drink have a 15 times greater risk of developing oral cancers than others
25% of these cancers are not related to alcohol and tobacco use
Oral cancer is the sixth most common type of cancer
The overall 5 year survival rate is only 50%
The mortality rate has been unchanged for 50 years

You get it, your probably gonna die. I have been off the stuff for 5 1/2 months. Almost 18 years on the crap. Best and hardest thing I have ever done. I feel SO MUCH BETTER. You have NO IDEA.

Google-Quit smokeless and go to Quit smokless.org. Your wife will thank you.

I am like an annoying reborn religous idiot, I know sorry.

No thanks, I'm not interested in quiting right now. Just looking for a cheaper alternative to copenhagen.

18 years for me. There is no substitute for Copenhagen. I strongly agree with these posts -- you just have to nut up and quit. Take a big chew out of a fresh can, dump the rest out on the ground, and when you spit it out, you're done and don't look back. It is not easy, but hell, what is? Bottom line, you may chew for the rest of your life and never have a problem. But it is more likely that you will end up with the same problems that 90% of long term chewers have -- tooth loss, gum disease, and head/neck cancers that result in death more than 50% of the time, and result in disfiguring/disabling surgeries 100% of the time.

Like Dinkshooter, I know I sound like a religious fanatic, but I can't help it -- I'm jonesing for a chew.

Unfortunately at 34, I've chewed since I was 17. Very sad thing is I quit for 2 years and believe it or not started again. Even for those two years I didn't chew, I craved it everyday. Sucks!

If you don't want to quit you can't! Unfortunately for me there is no substitute for Copenhagen. I would suggest chewing less or taking smaller dips and make your tin last longer.

I hate chewing, wish I never would have started.....as I spit into my pop can.

All of the statistics from dinkshooter are absolutely true and accurate. Another fact is that 78.6% of people using snuff have cancerous or precancerous lesions. More likely to get cancer, than a monster buck. If now is not the time to quit, be sure to move the stuff around. (Don't always put it in the same place.) Make sure that you see your dentist every six months, and make sure he does a thorough oral cancer screening (some don't). Don't be surprised if he/she wants to biospy suspicious tissue.

Remember that most states have programs to help you quit through the public health department.

Just quit. Put the money saved towards tags and ammo.

Cope for 8 years. Just about hand kittens when I actually counted the years to be that long.
I totally agree, there is no substitute for Cope. I have tried the cope flavored tabaco free, I have tried mixing it with cope, which I must say was awfull.
The only thing I can say is what i have done.

cut back to what is reasonably comfortable, and leave it at that. I used to be not quite a tin a day. Now I do a tin every 4 or 6 days.

Good luck

I chewed leaf, Beechnut, Red Man, Taylor's Pride etc. 1-1 1/2 pouches a day for 10 years or more. I quit 12 years ago right after I got married. I traded the chew for sugarless peppermint bubble yum. Now I'm a 1/2 pack a day guy but my mouth isnt rotting off. Give it up! I know too many people with lip and tongue cancer from the stuff. It aint worth it!

I tend to have an addictive personality so I resisted the urge to ever make tobacco a habit. I really never liked snuff so I guess I was lucky but I did like leaf tobacco and am glad I never allowed the habit to really get hold of me. I had a cousin who died three years ago from throat cancer. Chewed his entire adult life, died at 50 something. Believe me, it was an agonizing death. Very hard on his family to this day. Seems like almost every one of my good friends chew. I have other family members that still chew. I am not looking forward to watching many of them die the way he did but chances are extremely high that I will. Do yourselves and your families a favor. Do whatever it takes to stop.

LAST EDITED ON Jan-03-07 AT 11:21PM (MST)[p]Grizzly is the only way to go. Cope is almost $5 a can here in CA but the Griz you can get 5 cans for $8 at cost-Co. MMMM

P.S. My daddy always said you never get any where in life being a quitter

I'm almost 18 (in another month) and have been chewing since I was 14-15. Got into it pretty steady around 15 but had my first dip around 14. Started on Grizzly wintergreen, went through 1 can of cope longcut and I can't go back, I start to gag even when I smell Grizzly. As for quiting, you really can't quit unless you want to. As for me, I don't want to quit, but have gotten down to a can every 4-5 days or one for the weekend. I've also started moving it around to different spots. I can make it through a day without a dip pretty decent still so I know I'm not totally lost... lol

Grizzly in the red can is about as close as you'll come for a cheaper brand. I "chewed" for well over 20 years and I think I was extremely lucky, I'm clean and free over 4 years now. I still have all my teeth, (except the few that have been kicked out) My mouth is healthy and I haven't had any problems, thank the good Lord.
You need to get off that crap, as difficult as it is, I know I "quit" numerous times before finally actually doing it. I wish I had all the money for the half cans I threw out the truck window while saying "I'm done".
When you get serious about giving the snuff up, go to your doctor and get on Zyban or Wellbutrin, basically the same thing. It honestly helps with the cravings a ton. You'll probably have to do it 6 months or more, but it's worth it in the long run for yourself and your family.
I still get kinda drooly when somebody cracks open a fresh new can of Copenhagen, but I know it would make me hurl stew now if I dipped.

Thanks for all the replys guys or gals (you never know). I do want to quit, but like some of you have said, you can't quit unless you really want to. That's one reason why I wanted to try a generic band. I know there will never to an alternative to cope, so maybe I will dip less if I use a less tasty snuff. That will be one step closer to quiting. It's also hard for me because I live in Texas where just about everyone dips. It's uncommon around here to find someone without the ring in the back packet of their wanglers. I'm going to buy me a can of grizzly today.

Been wanting to quit for a while. Reading some of the posts got me a little scared, plus the cost (over $100 a month). I through my can out this morning. Wish me luck.

Boohoo. 2 months after I quit, I go out hunting with 4 other guys. At one point in the morning I look and all 4 of them are chewing. No one held me down and stuffed it in my mouth. Quitting is really simple, you just stop putting it in your mouth. I wish someone would have really gotten on my case years ago.

The best part of quiting is not being a SLAVE TO A CAN OF BASICALLY GROUND UP WEEDS. It is so funny after the fact just how stupid it really is.

There is no replacement for Cope. They WONT make a fake flavor even close. So what I did was switch to a mint flavor that can be mimicked. Not so bad once you get used to it. Then once you can handle the taste of the wintergreen, switch to a fake type. Try Bacc-Off or Mint Snuff. It's been over two years now. No discolored teeth, no heart burn and no Cancer! Good luck! Do it now! If it's not an option now, when will it be?

My thoughts exactly Dinkshooter!!

I quit that stuff many many times, new can out the window & the whole nine yards but eventually wound up buying another can in a couple of days. What finally allowed me to get over the hump was one morning I woke up and realized that the cope was controlling my every move. I couldn't go anywhere or do anything without making sure I had enuf dip to get me thru whatever it was I was doing or wherever I was going. When that happened it was like a light went off...I didn't even have that first thing in the morning dip, just threw the can out and have never looked back.

Quite amazing how much better your mouth will feel and how much better food tastes, plus just think about all the additional bucks you can spend on your other addiction...hunting.

MichaelJ.......must be kinda tough chewin' that Copenhagen with them braces on huh? :) It's tough enough for me with crooked teeth. :)

LAST EDITED ON Jan-04-07 AT 12:50PM (MST)[p]I had the same thoughts about switching to a generic brand, but I just ended up weaning myself down instead. A can lasts me 5-6 days, and I only dip when I can really enjoy it. My 1st of the day is almost always after lunch, unless I'm camping or something. Also, I rinse my mouth out well with water after taking it out, floss every day, and brush my teeth at night. I'll bet that a lot of people that get oral cancer from dipping don't do either = longer exposure = more likely to get cancer.

Face it, we're all going to die, bad habits or not. 30,000 people among 300 MILLION people in America. One person in 10,000 will get mouth cancer, and of those, 2500 don't smoke or dip. I'll take my chances and enjoy it. The sad part is that I am still more likely to get mouth cancer than an LE Elk tag in Utah...

It's after lunch--I need a dip.

Haha thank god I got them off a year ago! I remember chewing with them in and it actually helped hold the dip in the right spot, it took me a solid 1 1/2 weeks to get used to dipping when I got them off! lol

I bought a Swaro spotter as a present for quiting and spending my money on something worth while. I also made a vow to sell it pennies on the dollar if I ever start again.

Flatlander. I quit the same way. Woke up one day and told myself enough is enough. This is retarded. Backpack hunting with 7 tins in the top compartment. How dumb. That panic when you go to leave the house and hit your pocket and it is not there, really stupid. No more.

Any of you guys tried the gum? After reading this post I just bought a box at Costco for 60 bucks. I hope it works cause it sure is expensive.

Dinkshooter-
Right on my brother. You & I were fortunate in how we were able to quit.

I have tried to explain to many how my whole way of thinking about tobacco changed the day I quit. It wasn't so much that I finally "wanted to do it", it was that I could finally see it for what it really is...stupid is but one of a few ways I can think of to describe it.

I also believe there's a psychological addiction to smokeless tobacco aswell. There's just something about taking and enjoying a dip that I don't think gum or a patch could ever replace. Granted, it might help, but I don't see it ending the cravings.

The biggest times when I have a 'craving' is right after a big meal, first thing in the morning, or shooting a deer, or after a fight with the parental units, or after leaving a girlfriends house... ah hell I can crave a dip anytime!

Yep hunting fishing a dip is a must, lunch and dinner also driving same thing. I have my work cut out for me for sure. Especially with all the hunting, fishing, eating and driving I do.

My friend told his doctor that he chewed copenhagen and the doctor talked my friend into performing a test. My friend layed down on the ground and held his arm straight up pointing towards the sky. The doctor pulled his arm to the ground while my friend resisted and was able to make the doctor work to get his arm to the ground. Then my friend put in a dip and did the same experiment not even 30 seconds after putting in the dip. This time the doctor easily pushed my friends arm to the ground. My friend was amazed at how weak tobacco makes your muscles.

When I was in high school all of my friends dipped copenhagen and they used to lace it with Jack Daniels and other liqours. I remeber many times when they used to fight over it and get into wrestling matches. They were always bumming a dip off of one another. I remember one friend of mine "Steve" asked my other friend "Mike" for a dip. Mike said that all he had was "repo." Steve said that repo was fine and he took a big dip. Repo is reposessed copenhagen where they get low of dip in the can and start taking out of thier mouth and putting it back in the can so that they can use it again later. I've seen them share repo several times. I've always gotten a good laugh out of it.

I never started dipping other than trying it out once or twice but I'll have to admit that over the years I've learned to like the smell of copenhagen as a friend will scoop up a giant three finger dip and make it dissappear. Good luck to all of you that are trying to quit and congrats to all of you that already have. fatrooster.

i remember as a child we had to take a chew from my uncle's Hawken's just to go hunting w/ him. everyone chewed so i picked up the habit too. i did quit for two years because i started to get a small cut on the bottom of my lip. the reason i started was of the cravings when people around me would dip into their cans. my wife also started smoking again so i went back to my snuff. i go through a can of copenhagen longcut a week. i haven't found anything that comes close to copenhagen. once in a while i'll get a can of skoal classic. does anyone know if they still make Gold River. used to be a favorite of mine at one time. all this talk of quitting, i've been thinking about it for a while. sometimes i get tired of chewing, but then other times i have to have a chew. especially after a meal. pretty much after anything i do. just feels satisfying for some reason. been off the bottle for 4 months and now thinking about quitting copenhagen. what next.....

It's tough. I just quit for the fourth time in July. I understand what you guys are saying about liking to dip while you hunt, and for the first time this year, I was able to dip while I was on my hunt, and not dip at all when I got back. I do miss it, not going to lie about that, but I figure I'd miss half my face more ;-)

Good luck to you guys,

WH

I have been chewing for 15 years now and I have tried everything to quit. I thought I had cancer and I quit. It turned out I didn't and I started back up. I have tried the fake chew and it helped for about 6 months and I started back up. Then one day I I was on my way to work and I told GOD that I can't do it on my own and I need his help and that was it. I did have the cravings but nothing like I had before. After all the times of trying to quit and having the intense cravings and mood swings, they went away. Anyway good luck, NMHS
