Elk Antler Mass

With all the talk about antler mass, I decided to measure a bull I shot and see what is the total mass. When taking the measurements I found it interesting that no credit is given for the circumference between the 5th and 6th points. Anyone know why?? I would also be interested in seeing some of your bulls that have alot of mass along with the measurements.

H-1 10 0/8 9 4/8
H-2 7 2/8 7 0/8
H-3 7 6/8 7 2/8
H-4 13 6/8 8 2/8

Total Mass 70 6/8 (assuming I measured correctly)

LAST EDITED ON Oct-01-11 AT 09:09PM (MST)[p]There are only 4 circumference measurements given per side......therefore a circumference measurement between G5 and the main beam tip can never occur.

When taking mass measurements, you don't measure the largest point between the 2. Most people are under the impression that you do, but it is actually the smallest point. The smallest point between the g1 and g2 and so forth for your 4 mass measurements. Im sorry but no way that your last mass measurement would really be like 13+ inches.

look at the web on that beast for his last measurement,i believe it all day

LAST EDITED ON Oct-01-11 AT 08:59PM (MST)[p] I will try and post a pic this bull is one i shot has more then 80 inches. Not finding a pic that shows the mass good.

I agree....i certainly don't see 13" at the G4, not even 10"
Great bull though no doubt!

the last mass measurement comes after his fourth, are you guys blind, his first measurement between the g1 and g2 is 10 inches

I measured the smallest circumference between the points, and I also know that you only measure between the 4th and 5th, just didn't understand why they didn't give you credit for the measurement between the 5th and 6th when you have a 7 point bull. I think if you count the points you will find that the 13 inches is between the 4th and 5th or am I wrong. Now if you are measuring the antler burr as the 1st measurement than I am wrong but if I read the instructions correctly you don't measure the burr. Just thought I would get some dialog started about what actually is mass - I see some of the bulls that are reported to be very heavy and just didn't understand how they measured them. This posting is only suppose to be in fun and not to be critical of any posting others have made about mass.

By the way, that is not a mancave that is my garage.

you measured between the 4th and 5th, but it is the typical 4th and 5th point. On your bull it is the smallest point between your bulls 4th and 6th point

thanks for teaching me something i did not know, sorry for being a schmuck about it

My post was supposed to say H4, not G....my bad.
Goforbroke is exactly right, that measurement should have been taken between the "typical" G4 and G5, not the webbed extra point. Your probably around 6"-7" in those places, which is still good mass for that area. Typically mass on a good semi heavy bull will be around 26-28 per side.
I love your bull, great character.....congrats!!

I've always just figured that a pretty heavy, not "massive" heavy bull should have around 30" of mass per side.

my hunting partner killed a 360 bull this year and thats what it had,30 inches of mass per side

I,ve been blessed with the opportunities to have guided and killed dozens of trophy bulls from the 350's to over 400+". I'd have to say the "average" mass measurments are like H1-9-10, H2-7-8, H3-5-6, H4-4-5 (give and take the 8th's)
There ARE exceptions to that though, i've seen bulls that are "bladed" on the H4 measurements and actually score higher than say the H2 or 3, so yes it does happen.
30" of mass is a damn good heavy bull ;-)

Thanks guys,

I learned something, I would have not taken into consideration typical vs non typical. Shame that all that mass between the 4th and 5th points is not counted - oh well - lot of bone there -

A bull with no mass would be 25 per side or 50 total. Your average bull will have 27 4/8 per side or 55 total. A bull with good mass is going to have 60 and tons of mass 65 and more. Of coarse what state a person hunts and each area is different. Going over the score sheets from last year that I measured the average is 8 4/8, 6 7/8, 6 6/8 and 6 0/8. That puts it at 28 1/8 per side average and 56 2/8 total. Of coarse these are bulls that make Nevada record book not B&C. I would say those will average higher.

I refigured the mass on the H-4 on the right antler and changed the figure from 13 6/8 to 7 4/8. that gives a total score for the right antler of 32 4/8 and the left antler of 32 0/8 for a total of 64 4/8 mass. Not too bad - course this is my measurements and not official. I would still like to see some more big bulls that didn't make the book but have alot of mass. Just killing time until my season opens on the 22nd.

LAST EDITED ON Oct-03-11 AT 10:34PM (MST)[p]I am a sucker for mass, I will take a massive bull over a long skinny tined bull every time! Here are my most massive:

Old photo, I'll post one up later of him on the wall.

H-1: 7 2/8 6 6/8
H-2: 6 2/8. 5 7/8

No measurements, he's at the taxidermist

As you can see, he carries his mass well! :)

H-1: 8 6/8. 8 5/8
H-2: 6 6/8. 6 6/8
H-3: 6 7/8. 6 7/8
H-4: 5 6/8. 5 3/8

The middle one is palmated on the fronts, hard to see in the photos, but it was hand-width.

Enjoy!
