New Mexico unit worth a darn?

After many years of applying for 2B, I find myself wondering if I have actually missed out by not drawing. Almost every year I know someone that draws the tag that I have wanted so bad, and each time they come back very dissappointed. I'm wondering if there is a hunt in New Mexico that gives a guy a chance for a decent buck. I mean that is what those hard to come by limited entry type tags are suppose to be all about. I see they have a few other "quality" hunts, but has anyone been on one that has been very good? By good, I mean a relativly low amount of hunters and a chance to hunt a mature 160"+ buck with at least the genes in the area for a 180" buck. thanks for your opinions in advance.

Cody,

I saw some nice bucks coming out of 2 this past fall. The genes are still there. There are tons of deer, you just have to get away from the hunters and stop glassing all those does with the baby bucks standing there. Next year there will be a slaughter on the little guys.

I've wondered the same thing. All you hear of with NM is unit 2 late season. Surely there is another unit that could produce some quality bucks. Maybe it's time to roll the dice in hopes of finding that sleeper unit!

If somebody knows of a "sleeper" unit I doubt they would post it here on the world wide web. Good luck in your search, if you find it I would keep 'er quiet or it wont be a "sleeper" for long.

Unit 5B and unit 4 the Rio Chama are also great units with great hunts offered. I've hunted both of these hunts though its been some years , but they are still top notch high quality units with great deer.Unit 5B had a buck that was 30-32 inches and another with a awesome drop tine. I saw these two deer in the Trout Lakes area last July coming home from a rodeo in Colorado and I another friend of mine knew of these bucks for some time . Neither of these bucks were seen during the fall hunts and I fear they were poached . If there are units that offer the same quality as the 2s' its 5 and 4....Still very tough odds of drawing....But well worth it ...

The Trout Lakes area is unit 51 but these deer were seen across the Chama highway which is 5B. dIDN'T WANT TO MIX THOSE OF YOU WHO KNOW THE UNITS UP....
