After doing some research, I found that these units are fairly easy to draw and was wondering if any of you have hunted them during the third rifle season and what I would expect if I hunted there. I noticed they boarder some pretty good units. PM me if you prefer. Thanks.

Those units are in the center of the the drilling activity here in western Colorado. Expect to have a lot of oilfield trucks, drilling rigs and other hunter to be running around on the large network of roads.

There is also a lot of private land that is owned by oil companies that is not huntable. There are some large animals that live on those chunks of private. You could have a chance at a buck that lives near a private land boundry.

We hunted unit 22 this last fall during the 3rd season. It is also an open bull unit and we ran into more elk hunters than deer hunters. However, when we got away from the roads we had some places to ourselves. Some of the Oil Company properties were re-leased by the CDOW last year, not sure if they were long or short term leases.

The 2nd season received snow and we heared that the deer and elk hunting was real good. The 3rd season was warmer and dry and harder to see the animals (no snow). We had a good time, met some real friendly people and we hope we draw again this year.

We hunt 31 and have for four years now. It is a pretty good area with descent bucks. The big bucks we see are usually on private though and a lot of the blm is land locked by private. We had a local show us an area to go and introduced us to some land owners otherwise it would have been a tough spot to start out in. The last two years the oil wells have added traffic and taken away a few of our spots. The draw has been tougher the last two years and not sure what it will be like this year with 0 points. Good luck , nwhunter

Thanks for all the good info guys; I appreciate the help. I guess you just have to guess when the snows will come and hope for the best...also avoiding the private lands. What size of bucks did you guys see on a regular basis?? SMOKEPOLE, how wide was your buck? What did he score? Looks like a shooter to me.

Thanks again,

This was our first time hunting unit 22 and we've just begun to learn a little about the unit. We seen a few small 4x4's and a bunch of yearlings. My buck was one of the bigger bucks we found. He's about 23" wide, I haven't scored him. He's currently at the Taxidermist getting a Europian mount.
