I'm plannig a bowhunt in late august, early september in the Uncompahgre for 07 or 08. We should have enough points for unit 61 in 08. We are looking for someone who could drop us 5-10 miles in the wilderness and pick us up later, and that could bring back meat should we get lucky. The rest of our hunt would be self-guided, DIY.

Anyone ?

Thanks

Martin,

There are no places in either of those units where you could benefit from camping in that far. In fact there are few, if any, places where you could be that far from a road in either unit. That does not detract from the quality of the hunt in 61 though. The animals in this unit are quality due to restrictions in the number of licenses, not in difficulty of access. There are many difficult to access canyons, by difficult I mean steep and hard to move in, not far from a ATV trail or road, in 61 that are legitimate places you could want to have a horse set up to pack for you. But, I think you would be wasting yor money to pay someone to pack you into a camp. IMHO you will want to be set up off of a road and then go to location of the day. It will give you a lot of flexibility in being able to hunt different spots.

Not trying to be an A$$ but if you REALLY are going bowhunt there this fall and are going to burn points wouldn't you at least buy a map or spend 15 minutes online looking at a topo and figure out that this is not needed?

Here is a link to the unit map:

Here is at least a starting point for a custom topo of that unit. 5 minutes and you should be able to have a custom topo in the mail to you.

I rifle hunted in 61 a couple of years ago..I'd agree with these guys..there is one area that I heard was good for archery and it is a little pack in..but not 5 or 10 miles..it would probably make more sense to bring a sleeping bag and overnight it, so you can be in your area before light in the morning..it wasn't so much far, but STEEP..not sure if the horses would do good anyway..
as for the reprimand for you posting this before getting a map..no worries.. I would of done it the same way as you..feedback and maps..you have plenty of time to get those..:)
Good Luck!! You'll have a great time on that hunt!!

Never intended to be a reprimand. Just a suggestion.

In less than 30 minutes you can get a good idea for how the unit lays. Just a starting point.

JUST a suggestion,

Thanks guys, I will get those maps for sure. It's just that those units are really not final decisions but the fact that the access isn't that difficult will be a plus for my partner who is in average shape. I can't see him walk 10 miles in mountains.
If we can hunt a couple of miles in but still bivy there instead of walking in the darkness twice a day, that's probably what we will end up doing.
Again thank you
