So opening day came and went with disappointment. I have been looking forward to this day the entire 9 months i just spent in Afghanistan. So the property i was hunting became over run with tresspassers this morning and the Elk totally disappeared off into private land i dont have permission to hunt. Now from what im told about the property im hunting it will be weeks before they come back. So my question is this, I have a general any bull tag....i have never shot a bull and had high expectations for this year, maybe too eager i dont know but today im a little disappointed and really dont know what to do. I asking for advice on where i can go and possibly have success, im not asking for your "honey hole" just some pointers...i dont have horses and cant travel too far due to my wife having occasional seizures. If someone knows of a place i could go in the north, i live in Layton UT near Hill AFB I would appreciate all the help. If you share something with me you dont want passed on i will respect your wishes and keep your secret. Please dont take this as begging, im just really wanting to shoot a bull and its been 2 yrs since i was last able to hunt. Thanks in advance and hope all of you have a great hunt yourselves this year.

Stop at the other private land owners place in uniform and ask for permission to hunt be face to face NO phone calls,Ask for the end of the season after everyone else(family or outfitter) has hunted the place, I know if I was the landowner you would get permission to hunt, for the service you have done for your country and me. Good Luck Hope it works out for you.

I wouldnt play the uniform card,I know the landowners around here have seen it so much lately its become mundane.Stop and talk to them and mention you just got back from a deployment,it would probably be more beneficial to offer to help the with fencing, ect than to show up in uniform and expect special treatment, many of those land owners are military men as well and may take it the wrong way.

RE: Military hunter (Thank you all)

thanks to everyone for the help and advice, i actually stuck with the private land im hunting and ended up with a spike tonight. Its not a trophy but its my first bull and the first animal shot with my reloads. 210 berger VLD's 3220 fps 300RUM @ 330yds...dead on impact he didn't feel a thing...total pass through not one bit of meat damaged...im stoked and to me its just great to be back in america doing something we all love, being in Gods country and hunting what i think is the most majestic animal alive. I hope to share many more stories and someday get that 300+ bull.

thanks again, hope all your hunts go well this season, be safe and continue sharing your stories.
