Whats your opinion on unit 43? My research tells me there are some good bucks there and it is pretty easy to draw out.

Just wondering what the terrain is like?
How crowded it gets?
If there is a lot of private land?
What size of deer I could expect to see?
What the earlier seasons offer vs the later seasons?

Thanks,

Fuzzy

If you look at the draw odds the early high country rifle hunt takes quite a few pts to draw. I've archery hunted the unit and there is a lot of isolated country with only a few scattered pockets of bucks. If you have time and legs/horses to find them it would be a pretty fun hunt but if not, I'd look elsewhere.

The late rifle hunts are totally different. There is quite a bit of private land down low. Just like other units that have unlimited general elk tags there are lots of hunters concentrated on most of the parcels of public land down low. If you have access to private land down low it would likely be a great late season hunt. It may be worth trying to find a landowner with vouchers....that will actually let you hunt his property!!!! Just like anywhere else if you are at the right place at the right time you may get lucky and get a wall-hanger!

I've not hunted the first 2 seasons, but by the last 2 seasons, the deer have moved out of the high country (for the most part), and are located on private land for the most part. There is some access to public land at lower elevations, but it limited and very crowded. I would be leery to hunt that unit in season 3 or 4 without access to private land.

I muzzle loaded it last year. It was very crowded, even for a UT hunter. Bucks were in the heavy timber 30 seconds after daylight and didn't come out at night... VERY tough.

Thanks for all the helpful insight guys. I appreciate it. Keep it coming if you have any better options for a first-time Colorado hunter looking to draw without points on the best hunt he can find (preferably on public land).
