Broken bull question

LAST EDITED ON Oct-28-11 AT 01:33PM (MST)[p]Would you shoot a bull that would be 350+ had is left antler not been broken off above the second tine? I plan on it but was told not to waste my time with it. I don't give a $ht about B and C. Not sure I'd care for another bull going 320 with both sides if I can take a broken 350 or 360 sized bull.

I would never consider it personally but that is just me. I would also shoot a smaller buck/bull that is in tact than a larger buck/bull that is broken. A brow tine or one point maybe but not half of one side.

+1 if you are an average hunter then you can't eat the horns anyway. If you are about B/C pts then you give the bull a pass and it is his lucky day :)

I always say to shoot what make you happy and not what makes some-one else happy. If it trips your trigger shoot a way.

I passed on a 6x7 and 6 with a huge wail tail in the same day. Each had 4-8 inches broke off of one point. Both were well over 350. We all three figured them both between 365 and 380. I wanted a perfect bull at that time. I ended up with a high 340s bull that was perfect. It's been 2 years and I'm still kind of kickin' myself. I guess after saying that, if you like him I'd shoot him. Lessons learned for me.

in my opinion ( i dont want all kinds of flack for this) if i had a old bull and a young spike bull standing side by side during bow season, i would probably shoot the spike!
reason being that if that bull is old and isnt scoring anymore then 360" i would rather have some young tender meat! i just want meat in the freezer! i could care less about the inches.

IMO, and I tell this to all my elk clients, if you don't care about the book, then take him and let your taxidermist fix it like it WAS!

I'm not talking about "building" a rack, but just replacing what is obviously missing. Sure there may be some differences from side-to-side, but taking that bull is for your enjoyment and satisfaction, not anyone else, so if you like him, take 'em and be happy.

The bull I took last year with a muzzleloader here in AZ had 6 3/4 inches of broke off antler of his rack on the left side.

I'm having it fixed as he isn't going into any books, just on my wall as he is the last bull I'll ever take.

Oh, as he was, he wasn't too bad, he still grossed 378 2/8..

Then just get a cow tag, you'll draw every year...
Someone would love your bull tag...

I agree with DonMartin. I shot a 350ish bull that had 2 of his fronts tines broken off and the end of a couple of other points. My taxi fixed them nicely. Now a whole main beam busted off would be a different story. Kinda hard to guess and put that back.

Here is the bull before and after...

Dang thats a sweet looking rack

A taxi can fix inches pretty easy and make them look pretty darn good.

Alot of people stress about young tender meat. 12 Year old bull killed off monroe a few years back is one of best elk i ever ate.

How about sharing a recipe how to make old elk edible?

My bull was aged at 10 1/2 and he is as tough as leather!!!! I ground most of him up and the hamburger is good, but the steaks and roasts are really tough!

Try this marinade....

1/2 Cup of cooking oil ( we prefer olive oil )
2 tablespoons of soy sauce
1 teaspoon worcestershire sauce
1/4 teaspoon dry mustard
1/2 cup white wine
1/2 cup catsup
3 small cloves of garlic
1 teaspoon lemon juice

Pour on elk or venison and let set for three hours or more at room temperature. Set a small amount aside for basting. Then pound meat with a mallat on both sides to tenderize. Want them to look like hamberger patties. Then grill meat. Important to not overcook. Leave some pink in the middle.

I have also let the meat marinade overnight in the fridge. Seems to get a little more tender this way.

Thanks, have given this recipe to the chief cook and bottle washer around this place, and we'll sure try it!

I didn't hesitate to shoot a busted bull. We had a history with this bull and shooting a mature bull is hard, just because he is busted doesn't make him any dumber. Mine is 350 gross busted, 390ish if he wasn?t busted. It took me a while to have him repaired, and I'm glad I made him whole again!
