LAST EDITED ON Nov-12-11 AT 11:09PM (MST)[p]Had a great time with good friends on the 2011 Utah general muzzloader elk hunt. I had a couple of opportunities to kill spikes before I took the bull pictured below, but flat out blew it and missed. I was bummed at the missed chances, but taking a raghorn on the second to the last evening made it a little easier pill to swallow. A couple other guys had opportunities to take bulls, but couldn't quite put it all together. There were six of us in camp for the entire hunt, with a few other guys coming for only a day or two. When it was all said and done, we ended up with three bulls (3x5, 4x4, spike) and six cows on the ground. Anyone who has hunted the general season open bull units knows what an accomplishment it is to harvest a bull, so we were thrilled at our success this year.
I killed my bull at 125 yards with my .50 Cal. T/C Triumph topped with a 1x Sightron, shooting 100 grains 777 and a 250 grain T/C Shockwave. My bull was shot broadside through the left shoulder and the pictured bullet was recovered in the off shoulder when he was quartered for packing. The result was a dead bull, but I'm done with Shockwaves and will be shooting Barnes from here on out.
My buddy Mark killed his bull at 35 yards with his .50 cal. T/C Encore topped with a Bushnell Trophy red-dot, shooting 150 grains 777 and a 250 grain Barnes. We recovered two Barnes from cows and they were picture perfect; the rest were complete pass-throughs.
