Say you had just a few seconds to look at one of these critters and you had to make a decision.
Which one would you take and why?
Say it's opening day and your in a good area just for speculation.
Have fun.

I wouldn't have shot any of them

it would only have taken me 1-2 seconds to see them and pass out.
i haven't seen any truly large mule deer on the hoof while hunting, you see.

Wow lots of good lookin bucks there. All shooters in my book but if I had to choose just one me thinks the first one. IMHO, the first one seems to have the best all around mass, heigth, & width. Great post, can't wait to hear what others have to say.

Thanks for sharing!
Mark

All of them are great bucks and I would have a tough time passing on any of them. Each has some characteristics that are different than the others. I would have to say that my first choice would be the last one. I love the character. Thanks for the cool post.

they are all nice...but I would shoot the last because of the stickers...haven't shot one with stickers or drops before...

I would shoot the last for sure. I dont know if he is the best scoreing buck but i would not care one bit.He is huge

#2 ,I personally like the shape of the rack ,If the chance was given ,done .My second choice would be # 5 ,just an awesome buck.I would like to say this ,To each his own ,all of the deer are great bucks . My choices are by ,if I seen the buck by itself. If I seen the group together I would not even get a shot off due to cardiac arrest. Great pics .fldrw

The second to last has good looking forks and mass. I can't tell for sure, but he might score the highest, depending on the typcial frame of the bottom buck. The bottom buck would be my first choice though. I just like those cheaters that come straight out. Are these CO bucks? They have that CO look to them.

The bottom buck is a monster compared to the rest of the group which I have trouble believing any would gross over 190. The bottom buck is 35-36 outside and grosses over 210 and would look like a man among boys if the rest of the bucks were in the same photo.

I know I only had a few seconds.......5 minutes later! LOL!

As soon as I saw #2 I said BANG! I would keep it quiet and come back next year to hunt the last one. Can I do that? Please?

I want 'em all!:)

Steve

Been two years since I filled the freezer, so I'd have to say I'd throw every last one of them on the BBQ. I've only seen two bucks in that size range though, I'd probably shat myself in reality and have to run off and find some foliage without getting a shot...

Personally, I'd pass on all those bucks except for the very last one. Every buck is nice, don't get me wrong, but you can't shoot a whopper like that last buck if you kill every nice buck you see. There are a few in that bunch that may be tempting on the last day of the season, but given how my last day went this past year, I might still pass.

#4 or #5. the last one is a no brainer haha. all awesome bucks, and really cool pictures!!

I passed on the bucks untill I got to #5 then I kicked myself in the but when I saw #6.

I still would have been plenty happy with #5.

Different strokes I guess. I love #1. Love those racks that are high and just continue to tilt out all the way to the top, gaining width. Probably 3 that would out-score it but if they were side by side, I'd probably take #1 over even the last one. Isn't #1 29-30"?

Since I'm (in speculation) a good area and seen all these bucks the first day I wouldn't shoot any of them cause this tells me there is no other hunting pressure and I'm gonna see what else shows up because a popeye buck might just be around the corner. In a weeks time if I didn't find Popeye I'd whack the last one. By the way some of these bucks look in poor shape after a rough rut and they would be pretty tough tasting.

Excellent point Longun. It totally depends on what area your hunting, period. If you are lucky enough to have been drawn for a good tag and are seeing these the first day or two, then you could hold out. If you are like me and many other people I know that have been trying for years to draw a good muley tag and have never been drawn, you would be lucky to have seen just one of these bucks in a Wa. general season on public ground, particularly if you only had 4-5 days to hunt. Some people can hunt the entire season and that's great. Other's have other priorities.....

Colorado bucks.
We all have an idea for what we are after.
Then again to most of us score is not everything and that is fine as well.

My opinion all speculation of course if I were hunting for a high scoring buck would be.

I would guess the first buck is close to 30" but has weak main beams. Has a few extras on his top end.

2nd buck is huge body wise but the rack has short tine length. In my opinion he would score the lowest out of all of them.

3rd buck would score better than all the others except the last buck pictured. Decent tine length, fair main beams and great G2's. First thought would be in the 180+ish range.

4th buck has a decent top end and very good mass but short main beams and short G4's.

5th buck decent main beams but side to side deductions would kill it's score.

6th buck is a freak and may not score in the huge catagory but would definitely score in the wow factor.

If during hunting conditions I had a choice theoretically as for what I am after now at this point in my hunting life I would probably pass on all except number six.
No matter what your personal idea of your buck is I wish you all the best.

At first glance, you might not think from the photos that there is that much difference between #1 and #6. However, since they are both the only really good frontal shots, it is easier to compare that at least. Look how much wider than the ears #6 is and compare both of their heights to their bodies. Making just those comparisons, you can tell #6 is head and shoulders above #1 and the rest.

Opening day in a good area...top buck would get a second look, but no lead. The next four easily pass up. Number five--he's a toad compared to the rest, and a heck of a buck in any unit. I'd have a real hard time passing him up on any tag and under any circumstance.

#6, #4, #1, #2, #5, #3. In that order. Just eye appeal. #4 and #6 and the probably the best scorers of the bunch.

3 and 4 are too tough for me too accurately judge because of the angle. I personally like a rack with mass, so just for mass I would say 6 and 4.

OK- Here is buck #3 front view up close

Maybe that will help those of you make up your mind on those two?

Shooter, shooter, shooter, shooter, shooter, shooter. The only problem is my gun can only hold 3 shells and that would be some fast reloading! lol

So, if the scenario is opening day in a good area, permit unit, controlled hunt, etc....... The first four are getting some serious consideration, but ultimately i'd like to think i could stay off the trigger. The last couple are getting shot immediately in about any hunting situation i'm every likely to be in.

They're all shooters in a general season! Great pics BTW...
