NV Seasons

I just looked on NDOW's site.

http://www.ndow.org/hunt/seasons/recommendations.shtm

There are the season reccomedations for the next two years.

Some things have changed. The big things are splitting a lot of rifle deer seasons to an early and late season, and having the seasons start on a DATE rather than a DAY.

I have looked through everything, and it seems to be as simple as it can be with all of the seasons there are in the state.

Some elk and antelope rifle seasons were also split.

I like how it looks. I will be at my wildlife advisory board meeting on the 5th to show my support for it.

Everyone else's ideas?

Later,

Marcial

Hunt #1235 is a special draw for hunters who sign with an outfitter first. You go into an early draw that takes place before the regular draw.

There are some very interesting changes. Enough to make a guy rethink his hunting season. fatrooster.

I agrre, fatrooster. The split elk and deer seasons will definitely get me thinking on what to do. Best of luck to you in 2007!

I was at the meeting to set or recomend date changes, expect more change to come.

Please elaborate NVMDF. Personally, I'm trying to decide weather to apply my daughter for the early or the late deer, and then where that leaves me to apply for.

Colo has had great results splitting seasons to allow more hunters the opportunity to hunt with less crowded conditions. Currently Colo has multi-seasons for rifle deer and elk, and even bighorn sheep and mtn goat. It is hard to say how this will work in NV?

There are so few tags offered to NV nonresidents that splitting seasons may backfire and make it even tougher to draw some of the premium late deer hunts or prime hunting dates. As an example, if there are currently 10 tags offered for a current season and next year there are 2 seasons with 6 tags each (an increase of 2 tags) I have a feeling most guys will still try to draw the premier late season hunt or prime hunt dates. With fewer tags offered for the prime season the draw odds will likely skyrocket?

I have a feeling the early (or less prime) seasons will have somewhat better draw odds but it may be a lot tougher to locate and shoot bucks that time of year? I'm not exactly sure how this will work for elk or antelope? I would think the game would be "cherry-picked" and a little spookier by the 2nd season for those species.

Hopefully the overall number of nonresident tags won't be affected by the new season dates? It seems like nonresidents get the short end of the stick how it currently stands.

The idea behind the early and late seasons are for people who want to hunt closer to the rut and have a better shot at bigger bucks. I have seen good bucks in both seasons in area 10. Area 10 has been this way for as long as I can remember. In the early season about 25% of bucks taken are 4 pt or better. That number jumps above 40% in the late season. Not sure if that is because people are more picky during the late season, try harder, etc to get a big buck, bucks are more vulnerable, etc? Or during the early season, are people truly opportunistic, and shoot the first buck they see, or try for a big deer, seeing none, and then shoot a forkie on the last day? For people who want a big buck and then shoot a small one the last day, seems kind of pointless and hypocrytical to me. I am one who will set my standards early and stick with it. I have eaten tags some years, and others have shot smaller bucks, just because that was where my standard was set due to limitations I had that year for hunting.

At least for NV, you can put 5 choices on your app, so if you want a better shot at a bigger buck, put the late hunt first, then the early hunt. Or all late hunts. Odds on the later hunt will be greater, but fewer people will probably apply for the early hunt as their first choice, leaving that open for second, third, forth or even LAST choice (I have drawn 10 Early on a last choice).

Will be interesting to see what happens.
