Best Youth hunt Early or Late?

My son is 11 ears old but will be 12 on November 25th 2011. He just completed his Hunter safety and will be able to hunt in 2012.

My question is which youth hunt would be best to apply for? Early or Late hunt?
I have been focused on mule deer and have not hunted Elk before. I just want to try and give my son as many chances to hunt next year; even if that includes hunting elk and deer.

Any advise would be appreciated.

I'd go early. I have learned when my boys were younger such as your boy that the cold and deep snow made the hunt less enjoyable for them. I think the odds of harvest are nearly as good too. Its more than just the kill when they are at this age and not having to fighting potential bitter cold and knee deep snow means two less elements you'll need to worry about. That and early is a great time to go camping and maybe some fishing too.

Wyoming general hunt,,,,,,Youth tags $289..

Utahs youth hunts pretty much suck..
Unless you have access to private ground
on a general season unit..

OR know a general season unit VERY well, and have
horses to get to were they are and get one out..

I would have to agree with early if you know where the elk sre that time of year. I have a granddaughter that will be old enough soon and that is what we plan on doing. I can hardly wait!!!

Early all of the way. The late hunt can be tough. Early they are coming to you, maybe even bugling. The late hunt tired from the rut and held up in a hole someplace.

Late hunt Colorado, look at the units that cow hunts in Dec lime 2,10, 201, 13 and Bosque del Oso. No pressure, do not ahve worry about other hunters.

Pretty good chance of this being a road hunt as typically by the late season hunt the snow is also crotch deep on me. Then not to forget the sub zero mornings.
BTW I am referencining 2,10, 201, and 13.

Early for sure and if you r lucky your son will get to see one of the most coveted things in hunting being the rut!!! I go out every year and just watch those bruiser scream one of the most addicting things there is!!! Can't wait till my boy can get in the hills... Good luck!!!

I just returned from a unit 2 deer hunt a month aqo and agree that it would be an excellent place to take a youth. However, don't youth have to have the same number of Preference points as adults to draw these northwest corner units? Please let me know if there is a way a youth can get in there with fewer points.
