I plan on purchasing a scope for my 300wsm. Which one would you choose?
a. Swarovski 3.5-10x42
b. Swarovski 4-12x50
c. Zeiss Conquest 3.5-10x50
d. Nikon Monarch 3.5-10x50

I WOULD GET THE BURRIS BLACK DIAMOND 4-16+50. I LOVE THIS SCOPE IT'S REALLY GOOD FOR THE MORNINGS AND THE EVENINGS. MT 2 CENTS.

BUGLEMN

from your list I would pick (a.) If it were my rifle I would put a leupold VX3 3.5-10 x40.

If you have the money go with the 4x12x50 swaro, Or another great scope is the conquest 4x12x50 with the turret knobs.
Thats the one I am putting on my 270WSM.

I have the Swarovski 12X50 on my 7MM. If money is not an issue, you can't go wrong. I have the Nikon on my 257 Roberts, although it is a very nice, bright scope, its not as bright at low light as my Swarovski.................rf

this is a silly game, I geuss that depends on your bank account, but I did have a Zeiss, for my money thats the one..

but if I could afford a Swaro then Dahhhh

What D13 said or (a). I am not a believer in high power scopes. 3.5-10 is all you will need on that gun. I have Leupold 3.5-10 and am very satisfied for a big game scope.

I like the swarovski with tds reticle but prefer more magnification than 10 or 12 power. Personally I put a leupold var x 111 6.5x20 power on my 300wsm and it works great. Not only is it cheaper, but leupold can due custom work for you, I had a custom engraved bullet drop compensation dial installed on mine and I think this is Ideal if you are planning on shooting long range targets. I wouldnt invest a whole lot of money though if you dont plan on shooting more than 300-400 yards.

Its not the magnification you need to be worried about, its the objective. The bigger the objective the more light its going to gather, giving you a better choice during low light conditions............rf

My first question would be what other kind of optics do you have. Not because I think they should be the same brand or anything like that. I ask because if you are going to be shooting a very high dollar scope strictly for hunting (rather than competition) and using low end binoculars for glassing you have it all backwards. If you already have high end binocs then get the best you can afford for the scope. If you are using $30 Tasco binocs and a Swaro rifle scope I suggest you rethink. You will spend probably a few minutes a year actually looking through that scope. But you should be spending hours behind your binocs.

I have both Leupold and Nikon scopes and for me they work fine.

Just my thoughts.

I couldn't agree with you more: you do use the glasses majority of the time and your rifle scope only a fraction of the time. BUT, that fraction of the time I'm using it - I wait all year long for that one moment, that one shot; I want to make it count.

My glasses are mid-range, definitely not Swaro's, but not Simmons either.

I upgraded both my sons, and my scopes last fall prior to the seasons first hunt. we both have matching remington model 600's in 6mm- short barrels. anyway I bought 2 LEUPOLD VX-II in 3-9x40 for our remingtons- WOW !!!!! this is good glass, and they will last the life of ME, and/or the rifles. and I also bought one LEUPOLD VX-I 3-9x40 for my thompson center omega muzzleloader- WOW !!!!! I really enjoy these scopes, low light, long distance, does'nt matter to me ! I also bought the RX-II rangefinder from them- WOW !!!!! ALOT of difference between these new LEUPOLD optics and my simmons scopes, bushnell rangefinder- BIG DIFFERENCE ! as far as the ones you mentioned I guess after you spend a certain amount of money you can't really go wrong ? my VX-II were not as bad as I thought they would be, same with the RX-II. just my 9 cents !

I currently own a, c, and d on your list. You can definitely tell a difference in the optical quality between them. The Swaro a or b are the best on the list. The Conquest is a superb scope and the optics are close to the upper end Zeiss VMV and Swaro. The Nikon is a decent budget scope. Since Nikon is upping the erector to 4x they have closeouts on the 3x erector scopes. There are some good deals to be had.

Another one to look at is the Kahles.

The amount of light that gets to the shooters eye is more dependant on the coatings than the objective size. All of the scopes you have listed are bright scopes. Personally, I am not a big fan of the 50mm objectives. They require high to extra high rings and that makes for a loose cheek weld. Its better to use a medium mount with a 44mm objective.
