I've used about everything. But the calls I carry are; Primos Hyper Lip single, Carlton fighting cow call and a mossback widomaker. For a bugle I use a primos double reed diaphragm with a basic grunt tube.

Dead bull walkin for locating, cow calls for everything else.

LAST EDITED ON Dec-26-11 AT 12:03PM (MST)[p]It really amazed me how effective cow calls are any time of the year. on a late season spike hunt we had ten cows break away from a herd of thirty to come check out what was making that sound. Primos all the way for me, hyper lips, and hoochy momma, i've made some horrible bugles that made me laugh, that got responses from bulls. bugles are good for locating.

Woodwise and Promos hyper lip single primarily although lately I have been messing around with some coyote calls and they make pretty good cow calls.

carltons fighting cow hands down. tried many others and had the best results with carltons.

Bugling Bull game calls all the way! I love the Bully Bull tube and the Elk101.com All Star reed. Very realistic and versatile!

Whatever call works at the time. I carry an entire elk call store with me in my pack. Every single call in my pack has produced a time or 2 and it all depends on the sound that particular bull likes. I have gone throuhg 7 or 8 different calls while watching a bull before I hit the sound that tickled his pickle. Easy to do when you can see them. A lot tougher when you can't. My advise, purchase an entire arsenal and learn how and when to use every one of them.

It's always an adventure!!!

I pierced my tongue and guaged it to a 6 when I was younger and dumber so I can't use a reed call worth a crap anymore...had it out for about 6 years and the hole still hasn't closed up...DON'T PIERCE YOUR TONGUE IF YOU PLAN ON ELK HUNTING!!

Never catch,
Maybe you can hook up with one of the call companies and they can design an insert for your tongue that you can have with you all the time! You can practice at work, at home, while you sleep, it would be great! It wouldn't have to be limited to elk either, you could swap out a goose call, then switch over to a predator call, drop in a turkey call in the spring, maybe it's the next big thing, soon we'll all be getting our tongues bored out. Get that idea patented quick!

I think LOTTABULL is in the right direction. I really try to use calls that no one else has used in the area. Eventhough cows have different voices like humans, it seems they get wise to the pitch or something about the tone. So I try to use calls that may not have made it to the area.....yet.
