Looks like some kind of parasite, looks like his hair is falling out, the grey colored hair is the 'downy' hair under the long hair.

looks like he has been rolling or transiting to a new coat, hard to say whats going on

Looks like he is either sick and his hair is falling out or he is changing into a new coat but why would he be changing this time of year????

"interesting color"

That's exactly what I said the last time I grew my beard out. Amazingly enough, that elks hide is about the same color as my beard!:)

It's always an adventure!!!

Just a different variation in color is all. Not all animals of a specific species is exactly the same...

It's the evolutionary process at work!! That's one of the last few elk left on the snatch, in order to survive the DNR he is mutating to a caribou!!

When was this photo taken? My father in law shot a bull very similar to this a couple years back... Would be curious to know if it is the same bull...

Yeah, I just saw that... Here is a pic of my father in laws bull, looks like the face is a little lighter...

Well after searching online for a while I found a pic of another elk with "Piebald". This is seems to be a really rare find. I'm thinking I might need to locate this bull again for a few more pics. The new snow we got in the mountains might not help though.

I did see a silver cow elk in the wasatch a few years back, never got a pic but I think it's a rare but not impossible mutation in the hair....kinda like red hair, and like red hair needs to be taken out of the gene pool ;)

it is actually basically impossible to remove a trait such as this from the gene pool. So many elk likely carry it, they just don't portray that gene due to it being a recessive one. When the rare occaision occurs where two elk carry this gene mate then and only then does it have an opportunity to come out...

The piebald gene is pretty much a factored gene like stated if 2 elk with the piebald or silver factored gene got together you could get a siverish looking elk if you looked at silver labs on the internet that is the same thing kinda it is a gene carried by a chocolate lab. in other animals such as elk or deer i have hear this is where the albino gene comes from also but that i just hear say so i dont know for sure but anyways cool find you will have to find him again and get some more photos

Silver lab thing not true... I just researched it cause I was thinking of getting one, akc doesn't acknowledge silver. Silver labs come from a cross of a weimer lab. All "silver" labs can be traced back to two kennels that were breeding both labs and weimers in the 50's 60's time frame. People that have silver labs have to breed a silver to a chocolate lab to get the lighter colored silver to maintain its trait, true labs you can breed any of the three colors and get either yellow, black or chocolate. One of my females (black) will throw all three colors in one litter when bred to any male, and one female ( yellow) bred to my chocolate male only throws black. Silver labs are a false strain of purebred, though very beautiful dogs
