I finally got into the cows on my morgan/east canyon cow elk hunt. Hit me up if anyone still has not filled their tag and wants to know where i found the elk at on public land. Its been a strange year have not seen near the elk we've seen in years past.

I have three buddies with tags. They have been into the elk everytime they have gone up, but it just never worked out. One buddy shot his cow up there on Friday and we packed it out Saturday.

Another buddy was up there Monday and said he saw two guys hauling out a couple cows on a sled. Was that you?

BTW, you haven't seen as many cows as years past, because in years past we have had "snow".

Our tags are for the Davis-North Salt Lake. We've seen the elk a couple of times, but they were a LONG ways away. We were up Saturday and found the draw they had overnighted in, but they were gone when we got there.

Going to give it a try Wed evening.

If you shoot a cow now....its a two for one deal. I can't believe they let this hunt go on this long. And they worry about horn hunters harrassing wildlife? Congrats on your elk but I have to rip on the DWR for allowing hunting this late in the year.....or is it early? :)

Technically if you shoot any cow after the rut is done you are potentially shooting two for one! I agree they are further into the gestation period but they are no less pregnant in November. So by your logic there should be no cow elk hunts after November?

My dad and I have the east canyon tags, he just went back to VT empty handed. First time in five years he hasn't shot an elk. It has been a strange year with the weather and the fact the DNR issued 300 more tags this year than years past. Every ridge top has had multiple orange dots on them. We talked to a DNR officer two weekends ago who stated they were trying to decimate the herd up there because too many people were complaining about all the elk! People in immigration complain about all the elk but wont let us hunt near their billion dollar homes, guess where all the elk go? Sunday night we watched 13 different bulls and not a cow to be found! The amount of pressure and no snow has made it a tough hunt. Hopefully it will be better for me this weekend.

Between my family and myself we have 4 cow tags for East Canyon. We have not went yet cause we were told there have not been any elk in the area. Where are they? I would love your help.
thanks

Are you guys sure you're talking about the same area? (tag) There are two similar East Canyon Cow elk tags.

4036 - East Canyon/Morgan

4037 - East Canyon Summit

These two tags have close boundaries but from what I have found is that the 4036 area has alot more public ground available to hunt then the 4037 tag.

4037 has about 1 square mile of public ground to hunt in the entire boundaries and you would have to "corner hop" to get to that public ground.

I have the 4037 cow tag and unless you get written permission to hunt on private land, then you are pretty much out of luck.

Ya that was us with the two elk in the sled. The sled is a life saver. In years past elk were everywhere in that area. This year had to work a little harder.

LAST EDITED ON Jan-26-12 AT 07:55AM (MST)[p]We have East Canyon Summit # 4037. I can see it wasn't the best hunt to draw but anyone have any good ideas? Let me know. We have a land owner watching for the elk to move in that area and they hadn't yet as of last night.

SOUND ELK MANAGEMENT RIGHT THERE!!!! YOU SHOULD RUN FOR PRESIDENT! YOUR NAME ISN'T OBAMA IS IT? Oh look at that I found the caps button! ?

vtelkchaser,. you would not no elk management if hit you in the ass.,,.,. keep hunting them elk 6 mounths a year, see how long you have elk to hunt,,,,,

Elkun, NO ? I KNOW spelling isn't your strong suite.

I never pretended to have all the answers as you seem to have. I am however smart enough to know that saying cow hunts in January are worse than cow hunts in October/November is just plane stupid! A pregnant cow is a pregnant cow. Your "shooting two for one" a comment makes me believe you think there should be no cow elk hunts after the rut? You can't truly think that is sound elk management do you?

While I believe the current management plans could use a lot of tweaking I am not naive enough to believe late cow hunts aren't needed to some aspect.

That being said I will admit that I'm saddened by what the DNR did to the East Canyon-North Salt Lake hunt this year. In addition to selling over the counter cow tags for the rifle hunt they issued over 300 more late season cow tags than in years past. The area has been an absolute zoo this year. I had planed on hunting all weekend but after today I will be spending tomorrow with my family. Thankfully the hunt ends Tuesday, those elk need a break.

I was out yesterday across the valley taking a guy on our place and could see alot of elk over by the public ground, they were all on private property though. Saw a few orange vests, there was a small group of elk pretty close to them they couldnt see.

We filled one of our two tags on Sunday. We could have filled the other one but didn't have the man power to get two animals out of there.
