I have heard alot of tips and tricks for scent control while archery elk hunting. What are some of the routines you fellas have?? Personally i find the best technique is DONT FART!!!

This is what i do before any of my hunts start and i believe it helps but maybe im just crazy but a week before my hunters come in or my hint start while im scouting i will gather a bunch of sage brush and other grass from the hunting area and when i get back to camp i will take all of my hunting clothes and put them in 2 55gallon trash bags with the sasge and grass and shake it around in there tie it shut and leave it in there untill the day before the hunt then i will switch it out with new oh ya before i put the clothes in the first time i sprau them down with dead down wind scent killer

during the hunt i wont go inside a house or near a fire or whatever that will carry alot of oder or pet hair in my hunting clothes just to try to keep any scents off them that would be unfamiliar to the animal

it has seemed to work for me on any hunt so i keep doing it

The Guys that Whizz right by the Wallow/Water,well that always works well!

Hot Dog,Hot Damn,I love this Ameri-can

I stay downwind. By the time I get to where I'm hunting there is no such thing as scent elimination. Now if I was riding my Bad Boy Buggy and climbing into a tree stand next to a food plot, that would be a different story. I do wash my clothes in Scent Killer to keep from glowing blue due to the UV brightners found in most laundry detergents and fabric softeners.

+1 Sage!
I wish I had the article, but I read about a test done on scent elimination. They put a bunch of crates in a room and then had a guy get in one of them. Then they had a hound go and find him and they recorded how long it took to find the man. They had the guy get fully decked in every possible scent killing product, body soap, detergent, scentlok clothing, spray, breath filters, scent eliminating gum, everything. The hound found him in an average of something like 13 seconds. Then they had the guy just get into scentlok clothing and use spray, found him in and average of like 16 seconds. Then they had the guy get in a crate without any scent elimination, 19 seconds to find the guy.

I've never used any of it myself and I've had success. Even in full scent elimination mode, there is still human odor. If the wind is wrong you will still get busted. You've got to hunt with the wind in mind no matter what.

Use the wind in your advantage. Also I like to break off pieces of pine or sage and stuff em in my clothing as I hike. I usually will grab mud from a wallow and and cake my hat and smear some on my pants. Nothin like walking around smellin of elk piss. Mostly just use the wind though

They will smell you if you soaked in urine for a month and ate sage.
Either get an astronaut suit or use the wind.

Check out the article by Randy Ulmer in Elk Hunter Magazine. Pretty extreme and some of the stuff not always possible to do, buy very interesting article and gave me a lot to consider. IMO, I do believe if you feel more stealthy you will be

I just stay in the truck :)

1. I try not to get winded; probably the most important thing.
2. I keep my clothes outside and away from the cook stove, and like another poster, rub them in local dirt and plants.
3. Use of scent eliminator wipes.
4. When I come across elk/deer waste, I rub it on my clothes

Compromise, hell! ... If freedom is right and tyranny is wrong, why should those who believe in freedom treat it as if it were a roll of bologna to be bartered a slice at a time?

No joke.

One of the most successful elk hunters I ever hunted with smoked cigars from sun up to sun down. He always knew what way the wind was blowing with a cigar in hand and hunted into the wind.

The cigars were better for hunting than his health and he passed away a few years ago.

No matter what I'm hunting I strictly stay downwind or use a crossing wind. I don't even wash my clothes with any of the UV stuff, but I don't stand out in the wide open either! Using cover and the wind IMO will get it done!

After a week of bivy hunting the only true scent control is the wind. Everything else is a marketing ploy to sell clothing & products.

I have the best method...Keep the wind in your face. Saves you a lot of money!!!

Government doesn't fix anything and has spent trillions proving it!!!
Let's face it...After Monday and Tuesday, even the calender says WTF!

I have seen a lot of information out for hunters on scent with clothing, deodorant, and some showering products. There is so much more to eliminated scent to help out our hunting odds against the game we pursue. Here is a list of other home remedies that can help the hunter further their scent-free tactics for the hunt.

Body odor can be under control in 3 days by adding 5-10 drops of Rose Water to bath water and soak for at least 15 minutes. Serious body odor can be controlled by adding 3 cups of tomato juice to bath water and soak for at least 15 minutes. It is recommended to rinse and exfoliate after one of these or any bath/shower to rid dead cells off body and then use non-scented soap to finish showering. The following remedies below can also help total body odor.

Bad Breath

Causes:

? Alcohol
? Stress
? Diet/Food
? Dehydration
? Milk intolerance
? Poor Digestion
? Imbalance of Good and Bad Bacteria in the Gut
? Dental Problems
? Smoking
? Medications like decongestants and diuretics

Changes to Make:

Oral Hygiene

? Brush teeth/tongue and floss
? Get teeth cleaned and cavities filled at dentist
? Use Hydrogen Peroxide as mouth wash
? Brush gums and tongue with powdered cloves or myrrh
? Brush tongue with antibacterial products like chlorhexidine

Dietary

? Eliminate or reduce high-fat and high-protein foods because they can be hard to digest and give off gas.
? Eliminate acidic foods that create great places for bacterial growth.
? Eliminate or reduce sugars because bacteria feed off the sugar.
? Garlic, onions, and exotic spices (Ex. Curry) can have compounds exhaled for 24 hours in your breath.
? Cut out cheeses (blue, camembert, and Roquefort) and canned tuna and anchovies.
? Cut out acidic drinks like coffee and tea.
? Eat more fruit like kiwi, papaya, and pineapple along with vegetables (green is better).

Supplements

? Vitamin B & C, along with Zinc can help bad breath.

Digestive System

? Yogurt, Acidophilus, or Bifidus can add beneficial bacteria and improve digestive system.
? Decreasing hydrochloric acid comes with age and can be fixed with taking a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar before each meal or take betaine or pepsin tablets to help digestion.
? Drink plenty of water.
? Eat plenty of fiber.

Cures

? Apple cider vinegar before meals.
? Brush teeth with baking soda or baking soda/hydrogen peroxide paste.
? Take charcoal tablets.
? Gargle hydrogen peroxide or salt water.
? Take alfalfa tablets.
? Chew anise (licorice flavored seed), cardamom, dill, or fennel seeds.
? Take Chlorophyll and/or Spirulina in liquid or tablet form.
? Drink Wheat Grass with water on an empty stomach.
? Eating filberts (hazelnuts) absorbs bad breath.
? Chewing mint, parsley, basil, rosemary, thyme, and wintergreen help bad breath.
? Suck on a lemon with salt on it.
? Dissolve Silicea tablets under tongue twice a day.

Foot Odor

Cures

? Soak feet for 30 minutes in 1 teaspoon or Alum and 1 or 2 gallons of water.
? Soak feet in Apple Cider Vinegar with warm water.
? Pour Baking Soda in socks and boots.
? Take Zinc tablets.

Sweaty Hands

Cures

? Witch hazel or alcohol wipes wiped on hands will shrink pores and reduce sweating.
? Drink Sage Tea.
? Take Zinc tablets.

Change in Diet

A proper diet is also crucial in eliminating body odor. Wheat grass is high in chlorophyll, a main ingredient in odor elimination. Drink 500 mg of wheatgrass each morning, about a 6-oz. glass. Sage also reduces the activity within the sweat glands, producing less odor and perspiration. Drink two to three cups of sage tea each day to keep body odor at a minimum. Also, keep the body as hydrated as possible by drinking at least two liters of water each day. Fluid intake flushes toxins out of the body, keeping pores and glands free of bacteria that cause body odor.

Refined sugar feeds bacteria and fungus on the skin

If you have a serious odor problem, soak for fifteen minutes or longer in a tub of water with three cups of tomato juice added. Don't forget, tomato juice works on you and your pets if you have been "skunked"!

Remedies

Alcohol/witch hazel Wipe your armpits with alcohol, white vinegar or witch hazel instead of deodorant.

Alum Try using a crystal rock made from the mineral salt potassium alum instead of a deodorant. It won't keep you dry as an antiperspirant will, but they clog your sweat glands and contain aluminum chlorohydrate, which may lead to future health problems.

Apple cider vinegar Apple cider vinegar eliminates under arm body odor when used in place of deodorant because it reduces the pH of the skin. Bacteria can't live in areas with low pH.

? White vinegar is also helpful. Place some on a cotton ball and apply to the underarms instead of deodorant. The vinegar smell is gone in minutes and you should be smell-free all day.
Baby powder Use baby powder or talc in areas of heavy perspiration.

Baby wipes (see towelettes below) also work, but the results may be temporary.

Baking soda Baking soda, the odor-eating standby, can be used instead of deodorant. Just apply the powder to your dry armpits. It will kill bacteria and help absorb perspiration. Cornstarch can also be used instead or mixed with the baking soda.

Bauxite crystal deodorant works very well at controlling underarm odors.

Parsley/alfalfa Chewing parsley, alfalfa and other leafy greens will help neutralize body odor, probably because of the deodorizing effect of the chlorophyll.

Radishes Juice about two dozen radishes, add 1/4 teaspoon of glycerine, and put in a squirt or spray-top bottle. Use as an underarm deodorant or to reduce foot odor.

Rosemary is an antibacterial herb. Put 8 to 10 drops of the essential oil in 1 ounce of water and appy it where needed.
Sage Herbalists suggest drinking a cup of sage tea daily to reduce sweat gland activity. This is especially true for those who perspire excessively due to tension. Use 11/2 teaspoonsful of dried sage or two tea bags in one cup of water; steep for ten minutes; drink in small doses throughout the day.

? Fresh sage leaves blended with tomato juice has been found to be very effective.

Tea tree is an antibacterial herb. Make a deodorant by putting 2 drops of the essential oil into 1 ounce of water and apply where needed.

Towelettes (baby wipes) Useful when a tense moment surges the sex hormones which produce fluid under the arms and around the genital areas that, when combined with bacteria, causes odor.
Turnip juice Turnip juice will reduce underarm odor for up to 10 hours. Grate a turnip, squeeze the juice through cheesecloth, so that you have two teaspoonsful. Wash your armpits first, and vigorously rub one teaspoonful on each one.

Wheat grass Take 500 mg of wheat grass daily on an empty stomach and wash down with a glass of water. The chlorophyll will dramatically reduce body odor.
Homeopathic

Silicea Homeopaths recommend dissolving three 6X tablets of the tissue salt Silicea under the tongue each morning and evening to knock out odor.

nothing works, kinda like supplements and chemo therapy. Its best to just take a bath every now and then and watch the wind.
