LAST EDITED ON Feb-22-07 AT 07:34AM (MST)[p]Do you all like the 7mm mag or 300 wsm for mule deer? I know it's all preference, but I wonder what the consensus is? I will also be hunting elk and whitetail with this rifle. I'm trying to get one, all around, awesome rifle setup.

6 of one, half a dozen of another. :)
I love my 7mm Rem Mag and have shot muley, whitetail, and elk with it. You can't go wrong with either one.

I love my 7mm mag for deer and elk... but have just purchsed 270 wsm...will use it for deer and the 7mm for elk.

I would say that whenever an "all around rifle" is wanted, bigger is better.

All-around caliber fer deer/elk??
It's old...
It's lost some polish...
It's as common as goosebumps on a goose...
ANY truck 10 years old or more has at least 1 loose round under the seat, or in the glove box...
110 grain to 220...
Jackrabbit to moose...
Widest bullet selection...
Won 2 world wars...
It's no "glamer" caliber...

.30-06...

I'd say start with one of these.
Bee shure to add other calibers as $$ allows.

I actually own both the 300wsm and 7mm mag. I was just wondering everyones opinion before I shell out more cash to have some custom work done to one of them. I'm also going to put a top end scope on one as well.

I shoot both the same; probably not one better than the other.

Trick out your 300 Wizzum

Save your 7mm for varmints

0.024" diff in diameter may not seem like much, but that's a 17.6% increase in cross-sectional area.

JMHO tho.

I don't think I will ever want an all-around rifle. Doesn't that mean I won't or don't need as many rifles?
Can't live with that!

I own both. My 300wsm only shots a good pattern with a couple of the factory loads I have tried. My 7mm is not near as particular. Has anyone else noticed that problem with a 300wsm?

I have four friends that rushed out and purchased 300WSM rifles. All have sold them because they could not get the kind of accuracy they wanted. I bought the 7MM WSM Coyote, with the same results. All of us are reloaders and we shoot our rifles all year, not just to sight in before hunting season.
It looks to us as though the WSM concept, although it sounds good, does not produce the results advertised.

Curious if others have had the same experence as Moss cause I'm looking @ the 7mm WSM as my next rifle too. Not trying to steal the thread but just curious.

It will always depend on the rifle you get. Never tried a 7WSM in action, but I have a 270 WSM that shoots. And I've seen 300 WSM that shoots.

Mine is a Tikka T3 Lite Stainless. I know there are some other guys on here with some WSMs that shoot. Firstcousewas80inches maybe?

Either way, with good bullets, you can kill deer and elk at 400 yards with either one all day. If you think you'll hunt deer more than elk, you might lean toward the 7, or if you'll hunt a lot of elk, maybe it's the 300wsm. But I'd make the decision based on which rifle I liked better if it were me.
