I know im probably about ten years away for a good chance at a good tag. But if you had 5 points what unit would you put in for either a rifle or muzz i would dream to at least kill somthing close to a 350 bull i dont care about the score just want one good looking bull to mount. I have only killed a spike bull been way lucky with deer my family and i have killed a couple nice ones just dream someday of a nice bull. If you want shoot me a pm im not asking for honey holes thanks for your time. Good luck this year and years to come. I wont beat this last year had my first born and killed my biggest buck to date:)

I've heard a guy can have a good time on one of the CWMU's you guys have out there in Utah ;-)

Since you will be in the "crap shoot" for at least 10 years with either of those weapons, you may as well put in for the best unit there is... With the point crawl, in ten years, you will still be 7 or 8 years from an early rifle tag on the San Juan...

Just go big until you have enough points to be in the bonus tags on a good unit...

LAST EDITED ON Feb-06-12 AT 12:50PM (MST)[p]I believe you'll need to add prob another 10 years to that.. I have 13pts for elk, and I did the math, with the amount of people with the same or more pts than me(considering no one drops out) it will take me 18+ years to draw the san juan.. i think this year sounds like a good year for me to draw somewhere else and get my deer pts adding up :)

LAST EDITED ON Feb-06-12 AT 01:30PM (MST)[p]OK I normally would not crash someone elses thread, but the topic is the same for me, just little different angle. I also have 5 elk points in Utah. However, I've already fulfilled my trophy goals, scoring bulls of 320, 330, 340 & 350. I see where these state trophy lotto games are going and don't like the smell of it. I have points in many states, but as I burn them I am changing my strategy to more mediocre opportunity hunts. If possible, places where I can draw every 3-5 years and get to know a unit better. When possible, I also prefer to target units where access is limited to backpacking as a barrier to entry.

I've not thought of Utah as a place for this type elk hunt. Are there any 5-7 point units that would fit the bill?

Zim, as of right now you can draw wasatch archery with 7 or 8 points - there is one more unit that you could draw with 7 or 8 points but I can't recall it right away. Anyway, I am not certain they will be at that level in 7 or 8 more years. Also, to bluntly answer your question after looking at all the drawing stats there is nothing less - at atleast for a garaunteed tag than those listed here. Good luck and those are some great bulls you have.

Looking at biggamedrawodds.com I see that last year you would have been a guarantee draw with 5 points on units: Cache, Meadowville (Late), Fillmore, Oak Creek South (Late) for rifle and Cache, Meadowville, Cache, North, Fillmore, Oak Creek South, and probably the Paunsaugunt for muzzy. Other than those, you are in the crap shoot with the rest of us residents for rifle or muzzy tags. If you want archery, then that will open up several more units for chances to draw. Hope that helps.

How is the Fillmore, Oak Creek South sounds like its not that great of a unit but have seen a couple toads taken off it is the numbers just low ? and the Paunsaugunt for muzzy how is the elk hunting? Know a kid that killed a nice 6 point like 9 years ago. Im not to picky only have killed a spike would dream to kill a 350 but would be way happy with a 320-350 dont care about the score just as long as he would look good on the wall. Next to my buck i should be getting back soon :) Thanks for your guys time good luck on your hunt draws.

Cache Meadowville is almost all private, if you draw there you better be friends with a rancher that will give you access to his land or be willing to pay for the access. If you don't have the access to private land you will have a hard time seeing any elk the entire hunt.
