I have been invited on a elk hunt in Montana around Dillon on a ranch there.
Any of you guy's located around Dillon MT can give me a heads up,How good or bad the area is for hunting nice bulls,What type of bulls(300 or 340) are the norm. I have heard the the rifle hunt around there is pretty good, I will have access to a ranch it close to Dillon.
Any help would be apreciated. Thanks

If you see a 320 bull then you're doing very good. Your odds just increased having access to a ranch. Not knowing anything about the ranch I would have a hard time knowing if they hold any true monsters. There is an occasional bull that'll go 350 but don't pass on a 300 bull. Lots of brush heads and smaller bulls to chose from. Good luck.

LAST EDITED ON Feb-14-12 AT 06:47AM (MST)[p]I hunted near there twice. There were a lot of elk then (2006 & 2007) just not many big ones. If you see a decent 6x6 you better pull the trigger!

I saw an alfalfa field on a ranch the day before season opened in 2007 the ranch was closer to Sheridan than Dillon. Anyway there were approx 200 head in the field, approx 40 bulls, and only about 3 or 4 of those were 6 pts. if I remember right, the biggest being around 300" there were lots of 4x5's and 5x5's

I don't know if wolves have had an affect on that area?

You should be able to fill a tag on a bull though, good luck.

Edit:
I LOVED the area, I want to go back. If you get the combo license you can hunt deer, fish and hunt pheasants, If your on a ranch I'd guess chances are good they will have whitetails. The fishing is good and there are lots of pheasants.

Not me I own 2 business out here(both losing money) One is a contruction business and the other a hitch and muffler shop.
But I do have a chance to come there and hunt on a ranch and I'm trying to find out as much as I can about the area and the elk that call it home.

Maybe it was reddog or something like that that was making a possible move out there.

Just send pics when you go and let us know the general area.

hunted out there twice, during archery and rifle this past season. We hunted a couple different ranches and boy oh boy what the wolves and griz have done to that area is SAD...really SAD.
