I posted another thread in the wyoming forum but thought I would post here as well in hopes for more traffic.

Has anybody here hunted 61? What is this unit like in general? Do you think the heard is stable? Thanks

Applications closed January 31st I hope to draw it this year I should. It is one rough terrain area. In my opinion it is too rough to hunt without horses. Backpacked it a few summers ago I believe wolves have had an impact on it but the fire in 06 I think also helped elk population. PM me in November and I'll tell you what I learned in October.

If you are hunting the early season you are restricted to the wilderness only. Which means if youre a non-resident you have to hire a guide or have a resident with you. I'd say its a pretty good area and I have thought a lot about hunting it myself but it just seems there is probably a lot of people packed in hunting not an overly huge area. Good luck on the hunt, if either of you draw the tag. You couldnt ask for anymore incredible country to hunt in.

Wyo correct. On everything you stated. It might be crowded never been in the unit during the season. A few hikers and horse camps I've seen in the summer. Its not the best area to take a monster elk in my opinion but it sure is pretty.

Thanks for the reply's. I have 2 residents I hunt with, we havn't been in this unit yet. We use horses and this sounds like it would be a fair unit to try.

I've read a couple different places that there are alot of griz. Are they a big problem every year?

10-12 years ago the biologist spent an hour on the phone with me about 61 and 62 (Basically pre-wolf impact) Anyways, he told me that I could have a great hunt, outside the wilderness with horses in 61. He gave me some specific drainages that are in my notes somewhere. So I'm not sure the wilderness thing is accurate. 62 always intrigued me more because of the lack of wilderness. BUT with the wolf issue mostly, and bear issue to some degree, I got off those units.

And the "bears everyday" comment worries me. Not so much me but I really don't want my horses to be bear food.
