WY Deer Draw Strategy

Those of you with a point from last year, how are you looking at this year's WY draw? I know that we won't know for sure how the point system is going to affect the draw odds for a few years, especially when you throw in the wildcard of the Special Draw, but I'm curious to the strategies everyone is going to employ. I am not asking anyone to tell ahead of time where they are going to apply, just what you thoughts are on strategy and how the point system will change the draw odds.

Are you going to apply for one of the super low odds units as first choice, and maybe a General Region as a second choice? Regular or Special? Try to build points, or burn a point to guarantee a tag?

How did the point system change things in Colorado and Utah?

A quick question for you experts!!! If you have one point and want to just a general region and buy the special permit and get drawn do you lose your point. What if you buy a preference on top of your special and get drawn do youlose that point and/or both. I know that in some regions it was almost a 100% on the special draws. While also understanding that some regions have gone down hill and less people are probably putting in for them. Thanks ahead of time for the replys.

If you draw any tag as a first choice you lose your point. The only way to get a tag, keep your point and get a point for next year is to draw a second choice or lower.

There are probably some Regions where you will be able apply on a Special as a second choice and draw. My problem with this is that you are giving WY $240 for the point if you use this strategy to guarantee a tag.

I'm buying a point again this year and waiting to see what happens before putting in for the draw in 08.

I'll keep buying points in Wy until I draw Utah tag. Then apply for real. I should be getting close in UT and do not have the time to take multiple trips west in the same year.

I should draw Wy moose this year Utah deer next year and hopefully sleaze into something else. So I am buying points this year and next and then jumping in after that. Good Luck to those of you that do apply.

I am in it for the long haul and willing to take the time to draw one of the premium units. I'm thinking that holding max points in 8-10 years will help with getting one of the top choice units. In years past it wasn't worth trying for these units since everyone had the same low chance every year.

I drew a tag last year, so I have no point. I think I am hunting moose this year. So I went high dollar, as it was 100% draw last year in that pool. Odds are I would not get a tag in the regular priced pool, and the gas is paid for and travel time done. Plus with the point fee and price increase next year, a high dollar tag this year is not much more expensive than a regular one next year.

0 pts, I'll put in for general 1st pick, reg price. who knows, but I will be sticking with my gen tag, LOVE MY GENERAL AREA!!

A little different here... Reduced price cow/calf in the tough to draw bull and buck overlap unit. That way I am scouting and getting to know the unit and the quality before dumping any more $$$ or what points we have .....

I can't remember a year I ever put in for just a point... that could be the year a guy lucks out in the draw and gets a tag!

But then again I am really very Anti-Points and 100% anti point code only!

ridgerunner, from what I have read, licenses are going to increase 20%. Pretty soon they won't have a need for a point system because no one will be able to afford to apply!

20 apps in 5% draw units should get you a tag every year, Ha Ha Ha. Hasn't worked for me but I'm stubborn enough to stay with that theory, at least on mule deer anyways so I'll be applying for low draw odds again. Like SD said, since we're in on the ground floor, 10 years should get a primo tag.

I'm usually with Robb on this one but I just put in for Antelope, Deer and Elk points this year because I have a wife and 2 daughters that want to kill Antelope in Wyoming and all 3 of them will draw their tag this year for sure. That gets pretty pricey. I will be the official guide this year and a proud point holder next year.

It's always an adventure!!!

LAST EDITED ON Mar-17-07 AT 05:22AM (MST)[p]I'm thinking it is going to be a wild-card at this point. Some of the SW units might be easier than a guy thinks at this time.
Most of us are not going to burn our point at this time. I think that they will be save for the LE units so in turn some of the SW units might be able to be picked up as a second choice especially using the special.

SO with that in mind I went for 102 first choice G second choice W third choice in the the special draw
