Wondering if anyone has any input on unit 75 2nd or 3rd seasons for deer(possibly elk too). We have been hunting 31 but it takes a point now so looking for a unit that we could draw with 0 points this year and it looks like 75 is a possibility. From the map it looks like high elevation so maybe late season the deer are moved down lower? Also shows alot of private so maybe access is an issue. Appreciate any info and I will share what I know of unit 31 if it will help. Thanks nwhunter

I have hunted Unit 75 the last two years. The first year, I shot a small four-point (barely a four-point). Last year, I shot another four point (145"-type deer). Both bucks were shot on the last day of the hunt. The first year, I hunted up high on the Nat'l Forest, and saw plenty of deer. I saw a handful of mature bucks in the 150-170" range. Hunting pressure was what I would call light by Colorado standards. Last year, I saw one buck and three does on the Nat'l Forest and that's it. The second season hunters had a great hunt I understand, as early snows pushed deer down in late Oct. When I got there for the third season, all the deer were down on BLM or private land low in the junipers. I saw a ton of bucks around Bayfield...all on private land. I obtained access to private land on the last day of the hunt and shot a nice little four-point. I now have enough points to draw my first choice unit, but probably would not apply for Unit 75 again.

I found out personally that the areas around bayfield are private, they have deer you can see from the roads- but theres signs posting there as well. I hunted on the eastern side on nat'l forest land. I saw more hunters than deer, but I guess thats expected in colorado ? I took a 177" 313 pound 4x4 on opening day/afternoon and saw about 5 other bucks that were very very small but on public land. I did see quite alot of does- neat to watch. never saw one elk, saw a pack of 4 'yotes on private land, asked for and received permission to kill but never saw them again. I had a wonderfull time, I will be making the trip again with my son this fall. I'm not as worried about seeing/taking deer as I want to show my boy around. it is very peaceful up there, really pretty land in every direction- except durango- it seemed dirty to me.

Northwesthunter, I never received your pm. I forgot to tell you about the monster that was taken off of private land near Bayfield this past year. It was a B&C type buck taken by one of the gals that rented me a cabin. Also, both years hunting there I've only seen a handful of elk.
