I am putting in for Preference points this year but am wondering if I should try for unit 61 next year or wait for unit 10(I hunted 19 years ago) or wait for unit 2. I will be archery hunting and currently have 18 points. I know what I think I should do but wondering what you guys think. I also have 17 deer points and am thinking of a high country hunt.

Thanks in advance

I've heard a lot of good reports on 61 but have no personal exerience. I'd suggest you post this on the CO thread and you might get some response there.

How many years away from 2 or 10 are you????

I hunted archery in 61 in "08" after chasing 2 for 14 years. Great hunt!! I hunted the thick oak brush and heard 8 bulls for every 1 I saw but called in bulls to shooting range everyday the last 8 days of the season. Before that they'd hang up 50-75 yards out and it was too thick to see em much of the time.

Quality was good too.

Reason I drew and got out was so I could archery hunt Colorado every other year in a unit with tons of smallish bulls. And I'm glad I did. The 61 hunt was worth it AND the subsequent hunt was worth it also.

Good luck on a tough decision.

I don't know about elk, but 17 deer points could get you into a very good rut (rifle) hunt right away, if you are interested.

I thought about doing the same thing a couple years ago. My partner and I went to 61 and scouted two years ago 1st week of OCT. It was a fun time and we saw and called in several nice bulls. I would have went that way if I was going to do a rifle hunt but decided to hang on for Unit 2 when I decided to go archery. I am going into this years draw with 20 NR PP and hoping to draw. I am done with the point creep and want to just do a OTC somewhere every other year. I have 12 NR Deer points and will look to cash them in after the elk hunt.

With 17 non-res PP's, I should draw an area 61, 2nd rifle bull tag this year. It seems that my age and the points were both creeping faster than I could keep up with.

At 69 years old, this will truly be a "once in a lifetime" event for me. I should be guaranteed to draw, but I am still anxious.

Before you die.....Take time to live

I put in this year for unit 61 archery Elk. Me and my brother used our 18 pp. If we draw I hope we get some help where to go. This will be our first elk hunt with the bow.
