im thinking about the new split seasons in nevada. anyone ever hunt the early part of the season then go back later when it was one long season? how much difference was it. how about a poll not by unit, but early vs late hunts . im leaning to hunt early to hunt unspooked bucks. northern nevada, also i have 3 points going into this year

Early....got to get out there before all the big ones are gone.

In many units in Northern Nevada the deer are very migratory. In some units (area 7), you will see far more deer on the late hunt if you hunt in their migratory routes. Last year in Area 10 the early season yielded a 32% success rate with 22% of the deer harvested being 4-points or larger. The late season in 10 had a 55% success rate with 40% of the buck 4-points or larger. Late 10 is generally a much better hunt. Area 6 has the vehicle access that can provide a hunter with an excellent hunt in both seasons. Generally speaking, the later hunts will give the hunter a better chance of taking a big buck. The earlier hunts should have better draw odds.

It depends on what you are looking for. Not sure if you are a res or non res. From everything I have read, the early late split will be around 85/15 or so. maybe as good as 80/20. In some cases it may be as low ast 95/5. It all depends on what the County Advisory Boards recommend after the biologists give their Quota recommendations. Then the State Board has the final say on amount of tags for each season. Either way, I think the late hunts will prove better for bigger bucks as the rut will be closer and the bigger bucks will be less leary of their surroundings (personal experience from hunting ML, Early and late Rifle hunts in area 10). The early seasons will probably have better odds, but you have to work a little harder to get a good buck, and have to deal with more people than the late hunt. The idea behind the split was the "trophy hunters" could apply for late. Fewer people and better chance at a big buck in most cases. The early season has the idea for the "opportunity hunters."

Hope this helps some.

In My Opinion neither, i would go with either archery or muzzleloader, if you draw you are not going to see as many people but you are going to see alot of good maybe even great bucks.

Does anybody know when the applications will come out? I haven't seen anything yet, and am thinking that it has to be any time now.

ndow.org says retailers should be getting proclamations late this week.We should get apps. in the mail either late this week or early next week would be my guess. You can also apply online right now.

personally i hunt archery simply bc i can draw every year. when i was a kid i hunted 16 a lot and early in the season deer were tough to come by and late in the season they were everywhere.in that area you really need some weather to push the deer down otherwise its slim pickins
