Arizona Unit 9

It appears by my credit card that I have been drawn for Arizona Unit 9 archery elk tag. Wow, after 15 years of applying and now I have become an older man. I was in my mid forties when I started down this road of trying to draw a tag for Unit 9.

I am looking for a top notch guide who doesn't mind working with someone who is past his prime. I have killed elk before but my standards on this hunt is a damn nice bull or nothing.

Any advise is appreciated.

Sir..Please give me a call I can give you a great deal of info on unit 9. And can give you info on a few guides you cant go wrong with. Dave 602/228-1719

I'd call Colburn and Scott Outfitters... Good guys, willing to go the distance, and they know where some nice bulls are in 9.

I know JP Vicente of Big Chino has a lot of experience there. Killed some monsters out of there. I'll be going on my 3rd hunt with him this year either with a draw tag for OTC deer/javi in January. Good people that might actualy want to kill an elk more than you do. Congrats on the tag!

Take a look at Jarred Nichols . He is the owner of Nichols guiding service. I have hunted with him several times and he knows how to get the job done. The web site is nicholsguidingservice.com. Good luck you wont be sorry if you use them.

Congratulations on drawing one the great Western big game tags, the elk tag of a lifetime.

You are lucky in that Arizona not only has great elk, but also has a lot of really top notch outfitters.

I would make a short list of the best outfitters, and start making calls. Pick the one that sounds the best to you. That short list should include (but not limited to);

McClendon

Chappell

Jay Scott

Big Chino

If you go to the Arizona section of Monster Muleys, you will find several of there web sites linked on the left side of the page.

I would call Steve Chappell's guide service.Get some of his dvd's and you can see he hunts guys in that age bracket alot and seems like a good man plus he publicly came out against HB2072 as did Dwane Adams outfit.

The first question you need to ask is are you a supporter of AZSFW and do you support HB20772 and if they answer yes hang up the phone. That is a very coveted tag, pick an outfitter wisely ! Congrats on drawing it and I wish you the best of luck this sept.

Steve Chappell 1ST CHOICE
Steve Chappell 2ND CHOICE and
Steve Chappell 3RD CHOICE in that order!!

In all seriousness...Steve would be first to tell you to call numerous guide services and ask for references then make the best choice for you...see above.

But I agree w/ jodog..ask for ref's only AFTER they answer this question...maybe in writing...Are you or have you EVER been associated with AZSFW, supported HB2072 or any legislature in ANY form like HB2072??

If yes or if they even hesitate or have to think about it... HANG UP.

Such a great tag should not be wasted hunting w/ a guide who is part of a group who would like to take yours and my fair chance to draw it away!!!!!!!

I've had the pleasure of enjoying 3 elk hunts in unit 9, two on my own tag, and last year helping a buddy on his. If I were going guided on unit 9, and especially if I were a bit older, I'd book with John McClendon and ask him to personally be my guide. John is an outstanding individual, and his outfit has probably killed more giant bulls in unit 9 than most others.

Matt Schimberg and crew of Arizona Strip Bucks are doing elk hunts again! Not many people out there that put as much time and energy toward a hunt as those guys do

I would go with steve chappell. I posted this stuff on the other unit 9 thread but steve has it all. First and foremost steve is a grade A guy that takes tremendous pride in what his clients harvest and not what he is making on the hunt. Secondly, he knows the unit very very well and watches these elk year after year. Thirdly, he is one of the best callers out there and certainly the best i have ever met. In conclusion steve is your man for the job!!!

+1 on Steve Chappell! I consider him a good friend, he will give 110% to help you find a great bull! He is one of the best callers I have ever heard! You can't go wrong with Steve!

i would say it depends on what you are looking for. there are a handful of outfitters that can provide and cater to specific needs one better than the other. IMO, if hunting/killing a big bull is more important to you with your unit 9 tag than hanging out in a nice camp, having the best caller, eating the best food, "hanging out" with great people, etc. than you will be better served by some outfitters better than others. most of the good ones will be acceptable in all aspects of a hunt but some will stand out in their own specific way. my reccomendation would be to call and talk with at least five different guides and hear what they have to say, analyze what they have to say, and do what works best for you. IMO the outfitters i would call would be in no specific order:

1. Cactus Bull
2. Mullins
3. Mossback
4. Big Chino
5. Steve Chappel
6. Jay Scott
7. Marvin James

like i said before, some of these outfitters are better at one aspect of the hunt vs. the other. this is a tag of a lifetime for many hunters so i would treat it like that and make some crucial phone calls. good luck. with a little rain in april and may you should have some big bulls to chase.

Well said billy the kid. That's what i was trying to say about steve chappell. If a fella wants to have good "hangout" camp with tasty food and grade A people, steve has you covered. If you want a guide that's fun to be with when the huntin is slow, and you want a guide that's a awesome caller for big bulls, steve has you covered. If you want a guide that's fun to be with, has tasty food, and is also an awesome caller, and you want to kill a giant bull steve has you covered. Sounds like if a fellow wanted all the criteria you mentioned from good people, to good hangout camp, to good food, to awesome caller, and most importantly be knee deep in giant bulls steve has everyone covered. Hit the "that was easy button" and call steve before its to late.

If I had the tag, I would hire Marvin James out of Flagstaff, he is consistantly killing big bulls and knows the unit well.

MDnut!

I will second that. He will work his a** off for you.

LOL magnet, sounds like you really like steve. i have heard mostly good about him and have enjoyed his videos over the years. i agree on all accounts on why steve is "the man" to hunt with "end of story." except one, his clients DO NOT consistently kill the top end bulls in unit 9 SPECIFICALLY. call it as you may. as a matter of fact, steve hasn't really killed any giant bulls in several years in unit 9. there are many other outfitters that can, by record, claim to top steve in that category. albeit, the hunt is more about the giant bull you're going to wrap your tag around. good luck.

Boy, so many choices.....
The tough thing is with all these great outfitters when you call and want to book a hunt, most wont give you their word that you will be hunting with them personally! I know this is important for my pops, he wants a great hunt and a great experience and does not want to be brushed off to an employee. Along with that over the years keeping my ears peeled knowing we would draw this hunt one day, I have personally heard of some rotten story's involving certain outfits and people...all over the pursuit of a giant bull. I'm sorry I would love to kill a big bull but not at the expence of throwing out all my morals during a hunt! If someone is on a bull I will not bust his hunt, If someone kills a bull and needs help, We will take time out of our day to help....That's how I was raised and thats how I believe. I personally want to be in camp with someone with the same morals and pashion for hunting!!

Cheers!

Check out Randy Bryant from Seligman (Bryant Guide and Outfitter Service). He has hunted Unit 9 very successfully in the past and is a great guy to get along with. You should also check out Don Martin from Arizona Wildlife Outfitters in Kingman. Both are great.

LAST EDITED ON Apr-04-12 AT 05:43PM (MST)[p]Here is the best bull I saw to come out of the early archery bull elk hunt in unit 9 in 2011. Talk to lots of references and go with the outfitter that your gut feeling tells you to go with. Make sure you post up some pictures of your bull and best of luck on your once in a lifetime elk hunt!!!!!!

Another vote for Steve Chappell he is a great guy and a great guide.I've been on hunts with him twice and he is good, he'll put you into elk and get you what you want.He is also very skilled with a camera and your hunt of a lifetime can be on film so you can relive it anytime you want. When and if I draw that tag I'll be calling Steve. Good luck
