Southeast Montana has some good public land that is either made up of BLM, State, or Block Management. If you can find some Block ground that is "walk in only", try it on. The other Block ground gets absolutely pounded. They might as well pave the trails in and out of there and put in a MiniMart. The ones that retain some sort of control over their ground and somewhat manage it when it is in "Block Massacre".........I mean Block Management, will have some decent deer around. You will only have to get about a mile or two from the truck before you run out of human tracks. The CMR will have some decent bucks at times as well. Most of the ground in the eastern part will be open, sage brush hills with gumbos and deep creeks that hold a lot of deer. If you like to be able to see a long ways and use your optics, you will like the eastern part better. You can also work an antelope/deer hunt into the mix as well, as antelope and deer season over-lap 2 weeks. The Custer National forest in the southeastern part can be outstanding for big mule deer if you are not afraid to put some miles on your Danners. Every year you hear of a couple just absolute slammers that come out of there. A freind of mine killed a whitetail that came out of some ground that bordered this forest that grossed 192. This ground is more densely wooded with some open meadows, can be real good. Good Luck.
