LAST EDITED ON Mar-19-07 AT 11:56PM (MST)[p]My buddy and i are going to hunt muleys in idaho this year.
we're planning a couple day scouting trip soon and i want to check out this area. i was just curious if anyone on here knows this area and could point me in a good spot to start looking. im really not familiar with the area at all and could just use some help getting started.

I spent a lot of time hunting elk there last fall and I didn't see very many muleys at all. I would see 5-10 deer a day and half of them were whitetails. It's rugged country and I'm sure there a couple of nice bucks around, but I would be prepared for a tough hunt.

Dito what Torch said. I spent a week hunting elk there in 2005 and maybe saw a dozen deer the whole time. Good luck though. Beautiful country.

Thanks guys for the info. I have a couple different units i wanna check out while im there so maybe ill concentrate more on some of the other ones.

You won't see any whitetails in unit 51. That is muley country and they haven't established there. There are area's that have decent deer hunting but the elk have really taken hold there.

Outdoordan,

I have video tape of a whitetail buck and saw several with my own eyes. Torch was with me. I am just saying there are whitetails in some of those riverbottoms and farmland.

I've also seen a number of whitetails in unit 51. If you haven't seen whitetails in unit 51 then you haven't spent much time in the unit. Most of the whitetails that I saw were in fields along the little lost river but I did see a few whitetails at higher elevations.

I would say the other guys gave a good idea of what to expect with deer in unit 51. Don't expect to see large numbers of deer. I would generally see 10-20 deer a day but some days more and some days less. The steep country in the unit allows some bucks to get older but if you are looking for a 30" muley, 51 isn't the best place to look for one IMO.

My bad, I haven't hunted it for a couple of years. Never have seen a whitetail, but don't spend that much time in the riverbottoms. Didn't think that had made it there yet. It used to have awesome antelope inboth 50/51 back in the 80's.
