Unit 27 AZ

Its been a long time since I have been on here.
It seems like since I moved to AZ over 5 years ago from Colorado that I spend more time on Coues Whitetail.com than MM but oh well. Must be a local thing! LOL
I drew a unit 27 archery bull tag and am excited to be hunting elk in the land of monster bulls!

Welcome back to M&M Jeff!

I did 27 late date bow bull with 0 elk pts & 1 Loyalty pt...NADA--go figure!(I drew last year 2011)

With the big burn last summer, it should be the very best unit in Az. for the next 4-5 years, with all the new growth grass and green up.

Go get ya a big ole bull!

Plan on doing lots of scouting as the Wallow Fire burned through a lot of unit 27. That's not to say, it's not a good unit, it's just changed completely from what you remember. I use to hunt Gobbler point and Reno and all up and down the 25 road but not any more, most of that area burned pretty badly so you just have to do more scouting to find where the elk have moved. I spend a lot of time in unit 27 and am learning as I go. Let me know if you need any ideas as to where to look as the hunt gets closer. I am filming 2 hunts in unit 3B archery for clients at the same time as your hunt but unit 27 is still my first love and I enjoy getting out and exploring it so I'd be happy to give you some pointers.

Last year my daughter had the junior cow hunt in unit 1 and we hunted a lot of burned areas that we saw elk in or had fresh sign. So I am not terribly worried that the elk wont be there.
Heck, a few months after the fire there was knee high aspen already growing (or trying to after the deer and elk nipped the buds off!) in burned moonscape areas close to big lake.
I think they are going to be easier to find! LOL

These are ferns and stuff but it gives you an idea of the growth in a short time.

I have spent some time in the Campbell Blue and will look to see how that area is now.

+1 on the elk being in the burn areas. I hunted NM Unit 23 last year and they were all over the burn.

Id be all over that burn. I project the best Elk season ever in 27.

I cant wait!

Reports coming from unit 1 and 27 are really positive!
I will be up there Monday to set up camp and scout some more.
