Anyone hunted these units during the archery hunt? What type of country is it? What size of deer should I expect to see? How about numbers of deer and access to public land? Send me a PM if you prefer. Thanks.

Fuzzy

Come on guys!! I know someone out there has some info that might be helpful. I am new to Colorado and looking to get started; just need a little direction.

Thanks

I have very little experience with either unit. I turkey hunted in 84 a few years back, and from what I remember there is NF access' off of highway 165. Once you get back in a ways, there is some very good looking country, but unfortunately that's the extent of my knowledge. I know people that live in the area and they don't hunt those units. From what I saw turkey hunting, I bet 84 gets pounded with other hunters. Do you live in the area?

Thanks for the help...I don't live there yet, but I am moving there in a couple of months so I thought I would check it out. Keep those posts coming.

Fuzzy,
I archery hunted 84 in 1999. There is a lot of public access to the top of the wet mountains. I saw a lot of bighorns up there, a few elk, but very little in the way of deer. There are a lot of other non-hunting people up there during that time. You can drive almost to timberline. There were a lot of hikers as well. I only saw maybe one or two bucks and one or two does. I am sure that there are deer in there I just didn't see them. I have never been back.

That same tag is good for the Sangre de Cristos. I have bowhunted there and would do so again.

Droptine,

Thanks for the info; how were the Sangre de Cristo Mountains? What type of bucks did you see? Did you have easy access with plenty of public land? Did you have a lot of other hunters in the area? Did you end up getting a good buck? Did you see any elk; is it worth getting an elk tag? PM me if you prefer. I sent you a PM also. Thanks a ton.
