LAST EDITED ON Apr-22-12 AT 06:36PM (MST)[p]Went to check my bank account. No money = 7e elk rifle tag first time too. Looking for input advice any thing to get me in the right direction. Its a DYI hunt so I have to make the best of it. Looking for past years recon, scouting anything will help. Looking at the north section along 9 south. My buddy got drawn too for 9 so were looking a central starting point. Plan on at least 5 -6 days of prehunt scouting. I want a trophy but what's a trophy, a legal elk Im not picky maybee a monster but I going to have fun trying. Thanks

I think a lot will just depend on what the weather is doing at that time of the year. If its real mild a lot of elk won't be worried about dropping down. I know there are a couple spots where they consistently cross 89 just teh Flag side of Kendirck peak. There are some hills on the 7e side of the highway which tend to have a lot moving through them. Some of that area between 7e and 9 is wide open, and not much for habitat expect winter range. You could spot an elk at 10 miles and have about 5 bushes between you and it. It is better along the border closer to 89N. A lot is pretty flat though so you ended up hiking and bumping animals. The hills north of the White Buffalo (little building in a big prarie area along 89, can't remember the prarie) can be real hot spots as well. I would check those out on your scouting

Tough hunt. Shoot the first 5 or 6 point you see. Good luck. Try the cedar country along 89

Thanks for the input and will let you know. Any thing else crosses your mind let me know. I am hoping it snows and brings them down. thanks

I'm not to picky either my idea of a trophy is a legal elk, anything extra is bonus. Im coming out here to hunt hard and have fun.

Be ready to do what Azdogman said. You may only have a few seconds to make a shot in the cedars.
Be ready to spend all the hunt days hunting. Very few elk will be out in the open after the first shots of the first part of the opening day.
After the first two or three days, I would not pass on a legal elk. Unless possibly if I was one of those physically fit guys who could hunt all those days and not get tired.

Slowly walking the cedars with the wind in your favor might allow you to get a shot on a nice elk as the week get's late.

If the weather turns cold you could see some standing up at first light, but I would say it won't be out in the open.

If possible, go before the season to learn the road system. If I went five days early, I'd find myself run down on the opener. Go a month early and check out the spots, then show two days early for the opener. Just my thoughts.

Thanks for the imput every bit is helpful and gets me pumped.
Thats why I am going ealier so I won't be pressured and can scout, and relax. These tags don't come that often so I am going to make the best of it. Now if you can just tell me the exact cedar tree then were talking. Thanks again.
