Twin Bulls Harvested

I was reminded of a funny story while I was reading Zeke's post about his daughters 2011 Wasatch elk hunt.

My Dad had a Wasatch elk tag last year and after the hunt, I sent Zeke a picture of the bull we took. He wrote back and said he "almost croaked" when he saw the picture because it looked almost exactly like the bull his son Zac shot a few years ago in the same unit. Zeke and I are so tight lipped that even though we had corresponded a few times before the hunt, we had never given each other a hint about the areas we were hunting. But when we saw how similar these elk were, we started comparing notes and determined they were killed within a mile of each other.

I'm not sure they are twins, but given the evidence wouldn't you say these two bulls are at least related?

BTW, they score within a few points of each other as well.

would be interesting to try to match dna. those thirds are almost exact as well as the back ends on both sides

When gznokes email the photo to me I did a double-take. After we compared notes we realized that the bulls were found within a mile of each other. My guess is there has to be some direct familiar relationship.
Pretty darn cool to think about it anyway. I know we'll never know for sure but I'd guess they shared a father.
Zac's bull was 8 years old when he killed it in 2007.
Thanks for sharing the photos Mr gznokes.

I asked my dad what the age of his elk was and he said he lost the tooth sample and it didn't get sent in. It would have been crazy if it had been old enough to actually be a twin!

Your Dad's bull would have had to be 12 years old when he killed it for them to be twins. I suppose it's not out of the realm of possibilities. As we know, age is difficult to determine from antler growth alone so who knows how old he was?

Just a hunch but they probably were brothers which were born within 2-4 years of each other. Supposing that, your dad's bull would have been 8-10, which would be more the norm.

They are a couple of darn nice Wasatch bulls and they should both be proud of them!

Congrtas to both the hunters. They are very similiar looking. Neat to think about!!! hanks for posting.

Very cool. Having spent a lot of time hunting elk in the Wasatch unit, these bulls look very similar to a lot of elk we see. Interesting that the majority the bulls we see have a weaker right side than their left.

Cool story,
Now, just tell me where your wife shot her bull, I will be on that unit next year and I want to shoot one of its relatives.

I'll tell you who it was . . . it was that D@MN Sasquatch!
